My guess is that with the attitude he’s shown a few times already in his career, he wants to only go to a handful of teams in that scenario, and is expecting much more than a QO as far as money to stay.
Ottawa says there no guarantee we will trade you to where you want to go and from that point, things may have got heated, and here we are.

Isn't there a scenario where the player can choose arbitration and the team has to honor the arbitrator's award?
He isn't worth a 1st....but come deadline a 3rd...mind you owner might be thinking paying him 2 million to that point is not worth it.

He'd be a RFA, he'd have no say where he is traded regardless. They could have given the qualifying offer and traded him.
And of course he is expecting more than his QO, the guy just scored 31 goals and 54 points in 87 games since being acquired from Columbus.
This is nothing more than Ottawa shooting themselves in the foot out of spite.
But if we are going to go with blind speculation.... this does not happen with a white player.

25 year old player scored 23 goals in 66 games (29 goal pace), why would you think he won't get a 1st when Kasperi Kapanen did?

alright I will go there...seems like its often the black player who has an attitude problem or won't fall in line. Maybe the old boys are getting their feathers ruffled

I have no doubt about that. A white player would never just be cut loose like that after an all-star season and 31 goals in 87 since being acquired by said team. I've noticed it here since being more vocal too and not mincing my words. White folk hate them an uppity ######.

My guess would be Duclair probably needed thicker skin. Him representing himself was a terrible idea. He has been sent to 4-5 different teams in a short span. It’s obvious he has some “flaws”. Not sure why he thought he would enjoy hearing the reasons of not getting g the money he asked for.

Duclair acts as his own agent from what I understand. Not sure that's worth the headache.

31 GM's all talk. I hope he doesn't get screwed over because he chose to rep himself, mishandled the talks and Dorion besmirches him. You can see a scenario where he doesn't get a good offer which gets chalked up to non-hockey reasons.

Remember when Nigel Dawes was inexplicably bought out of a very cheap contract after scoring and 15-15-30 season.
Weird how this happens.

You have to look at the circumstances that resulted in the production. In Ottawa he gets top line ice time as they didn't really have any better options. There are a lot of players who when offered the chance to get premium ice time can produce. But put them in a lesser role or ask them to play a different role and the player is not as effective.
The history with Duclair seems to show this. Given good opportunity in Arizona and Ottawa and he has been productive. But teams who could not put him up in the lineup have not kept the player.
In Arbitration where stats and numbers count more than opinion and conjecture it's possible that level of production was worth 4 million a season on a one year deal. So owner who likes polishing his nickles is scared of that. Said owner also has reputation of being one of the worst in the league...
I didn't say it was a good move. People who follow advanced stats can offer better opinions on his real value. I would not be shocked if he ends up in Seattle on 21-22 and like a Reilly or Marchessault ends up being pretty productive.
Could it be racial bias? Maybe?

This is just stupid from Dorion. At least qualify him and retain his rights so you could trade him for something. If he gets over sheeted there’s a chance you still end up with a draft pick, if it goes to arbritation the Sens could walk away then.

They can only walk away if the arbitration came back at $4.5 million +

Nigel Dawes went on to have a great career in the KHL. I have no doubt he could have made a team better here, as a third line energy player who could chip in offensively. Was he never offered a contract league wide, and how does that happen?
Josh Ho-Sang is a legitimate prospect, and has all kinds of upside. The Islanders pushed him to the AHL, and eventually completely out of the league. Hearing the guy speak (through articles mainly) he had a vocal positive belief in his ability. He didn't say anything wrong, he just didn't bow to ownership the way that players were expected. His rights still remain with the Isle, and I'm sure they will bury him. It makes me question the Islanders more than question Ho-Sang.
Evander Kane wasn't a team player. Byfuglien said as much, that it wasn't a race thing, it was a Kane thing. I think that he just needed some time to become a man and he will be fine, and probably look back at himself and shake his head a little.
Duclair acted as his own agent. There's a reason why no one does that. Does that mean that this has nothing to do with race? No. NHL (and pro sports as a whole) is an old boys club. I don't trust generationally rich folks to automatically do the right thing, I think that they grow up isolated from reality. But Duclair put himself in a really bad position here. I don't know what happened in that negotiation room.
There are definitely questions to be asked about the culture of certain NHL clubs.
