Sens do not qualify Duclair
This seems funny. I would like to know what the Sens offered.
Brent Wallace @tsn_wally
#sens Dorion says they did not qualify Duclair. Dorion says that Duclair acted as his own agent and that they offered him a “substantial raise” but that Duclair will be headed to free agency.

That's really strange, Duclair had arb rights but his QO was only $1.6 million

How does he go to free agency if they sent him an offer (presumably a qualifying one)?

That seems idiotic to not qualify a 40 point guy at $1.6M

QO means nothing if the player isn’t going to accept it
It’s the arbitration that scares teams off

Players don't have to accept QOs but for a guy like Duclair why would you not qualify him?? Even if he doesn't want to stay, you can trade his RFA rights for pretty good value.... right????
Now he's a UFA and will walk for zippo. Baffling move.

The only players on the NHL squad with contracts of two years or more, on the Senators.
Colin White, Tomas Chabot, Nikita Zaitsev and Josh Brown. And that's it.

This.
Sens aren’t a cap team so they shouldn’t be afraid of arbitration anyways. And all the QO does is to buy time to keep negotiating or shop him around.
Losing him for nothing is just poor asset management.

I wonder if Duclair acting as his own agent had something to do with this. Maybe insults were thrown and feelings were hurt in the negotiations?
edit: sure sounds like it:

On Duclair, Dorion told @Pammerhockey - "I don't want to get into the specifics of the negotiation. All I'll say on this, Anthony chose to represent himself, and we told him, it's not always easy to represent himself."

Interesting. He was always someone I wanted the Flames to have a look at but I guess we are over loaded at LW anyways.

25 years old and five teams played for. Something has to be up with that.
I always thought he was a little overrated, you know the tools and tool box analogy, but he was decently consistent last year.
I don't know if I would throw him a big contract, but I would give him a try out or maybe a 1-year "show me" deal.

This is the same reason why players and teams like to avoid arbitration. You are in the position of arguing why the player is worthless and not deserving of a raise. Duclair should have had a better idea of what he was getting into, and if the relationship wasn't rock solid (with a gentleman's agreement on where a contract would land), then hire an agent.

Duclair looks to have had issues pretty much everywhere he’s gone. 6 months in NY, asked for a trade from ARI after 1.5 seasons, Blackhawks didn’t qualify him, Columbus had Tortorella rip him. Now then Sens would rather him walk then even bother then try to get anything for his rights. I suspect we haven't heard the end of this either.

What? This is like NHL20 be a GM when you offer a RFA a new contract but forget to also qualify him. Nice to know Dorion has the GM skills of a half cut gamer trying to race through another off season.

The question is, why don't you qualify him and then trade him? Get an asset for him at least. People mention fireable offenses regularly, but this is about as close as it gets. Let a 20+ goal scorer and one of your top players walk for free when you could have gotten an asset, probably a 1st.
