We wouldn't be having this conversation if Bennett turned into a top line center, of if Draisitle drops to us.

Or we should have offered all picks in the draft like the NYI instead of just the first round for Mackinnon.
I am pretty sure that is what happened, no? I was sure I read that Feaster offered all their picks for the MacKinnon pick in 2013.

Edit: Corsi and Jiri said everything already :P
I blame Shero, Hextall and Chayka for passing on Pettersen and Hughes in successive years to allow them to fall to the Canucks. All 3 of those GMs are now looking for work.

Maybe possession but you can't allow that many chances in soccer without getting scored on

What is the equivalent to 50 shots in soccer

No he offered all 3 first round picks for 1st overall not ALL of the picks. Though I think the Avs still would’ve said no.

Nobody has ever accepted an offer like that for the top pick

Just their first round picks. I mean all out. All picks in the draft. Hell I would have offered all in the next draft too.

But remember, the Islanders made that offer in the Yakupov draft. If it had been accepted, they would have traded their entire draft and got... Ryan Murray.

You couldn't know at the time that Mackinnon was going to become this guy.

We all knew Mackinnon was going to be who he was going to be.

Look at it this way, look at our draft picks for that entire year or even two years and ask if you'd do that.

The thing about MacKinnon is that he wasn't always this player.

He got serious, improved tremendously.

Has the internal fire to compete and get better.

Some guys want to have a dart, do a bump and hit the club.

Other guys fly their personal trainer in to stay with them at their lake house in July so they can train harder/better.

Different strokes.

So if you had told me 6 years ago that this is where we would be - I would not have been happy. But if you had asked me following that Canucks series win if the players had another step and would continue to progress - I would have set yes. That series win fooled the organization into thinking they could kick the contention window open.

The core hasn't progressed and as such here we are.
The Travis Hamonic acquisition occurred two years after the Canucks series win. The Lazar trade was only a few months earlier. The strategy to use picks for depth at the deadline has been in place for years. If the Flames organization was still fooled by the Canucks series at the time of these moves, that is an absolutely devastating critique of their performance.

The lack of improvement from the core is a fact, especially during the games that matter the most. The debate is over how the organization is dealing with that situation.

Pedigree doesn't mean anything though. Right now he has had two great games at an opportune time. I know that he is better than Hammond but I also realize how goaltenders fortunes can rapidly change

Remember Mike Ditka and Ricky Williams? That was close even though Ricky wasn't first overall. IIRC Ditka traded all his picks in the draft to move up and get Ricky and then basically went home.

How come we took Mason McDonald over Thatcher Demko again?

Or not, as it turns out. All signs seem to point to management bringing back largely the same group for another ride on the merry-go-round.

Mackinnon was held higher regard than Tavares, and lower than McDavid.

I agree after that point was all on him, but saying that he could have easily been a Yakapov bust we didn't know about yet, come on.

I'm almost curious to see how many shots the Avs could put up on the Canucks...60? 70?

Demko and Markstrom both on life support
