I could say the same about you, you were shocked and indignant when I voiced my opinion. You're panties aren't in a bunch, so stop whining.

Did George Floyd do some (incredibly) ####ty things in his past, probably. Everyone here has screwed up , not necessarily to the same extent, but he should be alive to face his wrongdoings.

Also on the dog-piling note: you have the gift of free speech, but you are not free from the consequences of what you say, hence dog piling.
George didn't just screw up, he was a violent criminal, and again I never said it wasn't wrong what happened. Does he really need a televised funeral and a gold coffin? (if that really happened) the media hype is ridiculous

Assuming the report is true, George Floyd was a pretty awful human. Like, total scum. Doesn't mean he deserved to die. The cop who murdered him should be spending a long time behind bads.

Having that kind of nuanced conversation right now is probably impossible.

You keep going on about this crime, robbery, that occurred 12 years ago, that he served his time for (5 years) and since then has remained arrest free, has worked ever since and has had extensive volunteer and church involvement on top of working, by everyone's account he was no longer a criminal, he held down 2 jobs, both of which he was laid off from due to Covid, he clearly struggled with addictions through his life, in a country where being poor and black means almost no help with problems like addictions and little way of putting your life together after a major arrest like robbery, but he appears to have managed it, something a pair of lucky, privileged whites like you and I couldn't even comprehend.

It's easy being morally and legally pure when you have every advantage in the world handed to you, try it growing up in the slums this guy came from in one of the worst cities in the US to be poor and Black, Houston, he grew up in a neighbourhood you or I couldn't imagine in out worst nightmares

You don't have a different opinion, you think the guy was murdered, you think the cop should go to jail, you just thought it would be fun to piss people off by slagging off a dead guy

Was thinking ‘what if’ - as in what if one of the rookies had stepped up and pulled the senior cop off of Floyd? He would have been hailed as a hero and/or sanctioned for breaking ranks and interfering with a senior officer.

It would have been great as George Floyd would not have been murdered, but I imagine the incident would have been much lower profile. If GF survives, I suspect greater likelihood the rookie is sanctioned and is an unrecognized hero

Is it not so much of a debate anymore because it's universally accepted as truth? Or is it rather that taking the opinion that systemic racism isn't a big problem in Canada publicly is now an opinion that is deemed by polite company as deserving to lose one's job or career for expressing?

No one would have heard about it except the boys back at HQ, and the officer would be ostracized for disobeying and interfering. He'd probably be harassed right out of is job.

Not Minneapolis, but this same scenario played out in Buffalo, NY back in 2006. The intervening officer, a black woman named Cariol Horne who had 19 years experience on the police force (1 year short of pension eligibility), stopped a fellow officer who was choking a suspect. She was fired and lost her pension under the justification that she put another officer's safety in danger.

https://www.cityandstateny.com/artic...-she-was-fired

Quote:
After she was fired, Horne worked several jobs to make ends meet. “It didn’t just affect me,” Horne told Spectrum News in 2016. “I have three sons that I have to worry about now. The message that they sent was clear: Even as a police officer, you don’t stand up against police brutality.”

On Tuesday, the Buffalo Common Council approved three resolutions in the wake of George Floyd’s death and the recent protests against police brutality. One of the resolutions will enforce the city’s “duty to intervene” policy, which mandates that officers intervene if they see another officer using excessive force. The council will also create a task force to review police policies, and the third resolution will ask the state attorney general’s office to determine how many days Horne would need to work to regain her pension.

Since her firing in 2008, Horne has become outspoken against police brutality and hopes to have legislation passed in her name that would protect officers who intervene when another officer uses excessive force and when reporting misconduct by fellow officers. According to McDuffie, a petition campaign is expected to unfold within the next few days to draw attention to the need for such legislation.
Emphasis added.

You can just look at income vs demographics and see systemic racism. Discussing the causes and solutions there is a lot of room for discussion. However when you have significant lower performance of a demographic group across any measure you choose to measure it becomes pretty clear you have systemic issues related to race.

Was a garbage human being. He went to prison for that, served his time, and then from what I've read about him was trying to turn his life around before the cops murdered him. Isn't rehabilitation what we want from a justice system?
