So, moving forward we have a line up like this:
Tkackuk - Lindholm - Mangiapane
Gaudreau - Monahan - Backlund
Lucic - Ryan - Dube
Bennett - Jankowski - Reider
Scratched/Injured: Czarnik, Rinaldo
We badly need to get another top 6 winger, there is no doubt about that. Finding someone who will trade our bottom 6 players and maybe a defenseman will be a really tough thing to pull off I think. Here is believing in BT. Obviously without trading our first rounder for 2020 or 2021 will be the real task to get someone for that second line RW role for this team. I hope they aim at some younger, up and coming guys who need a change of scenery and not sell our future to fill that role before the trade deadline.
Make it so BT.

It depends on whether Treliving is renting or not. Frolik was expiring anyway so a rental replacement who's more in line with the salary makes sense. He hasn't cleared cap for a long term expenditure because the salary was going away anyway. So if there's a rental out there and someone likes, say, Jankowski as a potential reclamation project, you could get good player.
They can afford Toffoli right now, without getting rid of more salary. 11 goals on a crappy team, RHS, RW, $4.6M prorated.
Hoffman has 13 goals, skates well, can play RW, but he shoots left, and he's a bit of a defensive liability, so probably not a match for Gaudreau-Monahan.
Haula has 11 goals in only 21 games, and he's definitely affordable. Shoots left, but can fill in at C.
Pageau's little, but shoots right and he can obviously score.

I'd love Hoffman just to see the converted Jagr jerseys.

How on earth is this a poor move? Get a pick, gain a chunk of cap, all for a pending UFA. By what logic do you think this was a bad move... I can’t get there.

Anyone who converts a friggin’ Jagr to a Hoffman should be laughed out of the dome.
It’s Jaromir friggin’ Jagr. If you have one, wear it with pride. One of the best all time.

Agree with this 100%.
It's very hard to make a deal with most teams because you have to send back equal cap to make it work and the Flames would want to send back a dump if they are looking to load up for a run. If you are trying to include a dump in a trade you need to add value, usually in the form of a pick or prospect. They have just opened up a lot of different options with this space, even if it goes unused it's worth the gamble for flexibility. Having the extra pick doesn't suck either. I've been critical of Treliving but this is a good move.

Frolik also most likely waived for a chance to improve his chances of getting a bigger $ amount and term in free agency. Not significantly higher, but showing that he still has some left in the tank. I think Winnipeg or Chicago would gladly welcome his services once more come the 20-21 season. Winnipeg could definitely use his services after losing a similar player in Tanev.

While I agree about option value, hearing (again) how we were in an player X and almost got player Y doesn't help the team.

I really liked Frolik and his time here, he was an honest player on the ice, and was good without the puck. But at the end of the day, he was slowing down. Good on Tre for getting rid of the whole salary.
I kind of wonder if this wasn't a shot across the bow of a complacent dressing room.

Exactly this.
With no space there are no options.
I am a Frolik fan. Good luck to him

For sure.
But I think teams enter into discussion that could come to fruition many times without pulling the trigger in the end. Wild guess ... 1/5 maybe 1/10 actually become a trade.
But without the cap space he doesn't get into any of the discussions.
I'm a trader ... once you've bought an option you are more than comfortable with the cost of the option if it never gets used. In this case he's likely looking at it as ...
more time for a younger player +
less NHL depth -
4th round pick +
That's your option cost.
But adding top six scorer that reshapes his top six is the thing he's looking to get with the option. Whether he gets that or not the equation above is still in play.

I blame Neal for all of that, and consider it justified.
Even if it isn’t true, that’s how I’ll be living out my days. Hope Frolik puts some points up in Buffalo.

A pretty big part to Calgary having a pretty lethal top-6 for a bit there, so pretty happy with Frolik's time as a Flame.
In both camps, the earlier the better. Frolik was battling for every spot he could find on the roster - and that's a great problem for Calgary to have. He won't have the same trouble in Buffalo, and there are quite a few weapons there he should have an opportunity to find a groove with. The cap-hit certainly doesn't hurt Buffalo either
Calgary obviously wasn't going to sign him next year, and they were getting better production for $4M less in Mangiapane. With trade options (roster trade options no less) still on the table, Treliving opened himself up as the best playoff-hopeful buyer on the market. It's a rare situation for Calgary to be in, but the many conversations we know Tre has been having just got a lot more serious.
We'll see what he does with it, but he just told all sellers that a deal is 100% getting done with someone. With this move, he's got a lot of room to make something happen.

Glad Dube is back in the lineup. Registered an assist last night. A much more cost effective and arguably more productive player at this point.
Good luck to Frolik, though. Think this is a good gamble for him.

I apologize if I missed it, and I'm sure I have, but what are the actual cap savings in this deal? $4.3M minus what he's been paid to this point in the season, I guess?
He was a Flame for 42 games of an 82 game season so roughly 52%. Thinking a cap savings of about $2.064M?

Frolik was a solid player and a good free agent signing for the Flames. Glad they got an asset for him and freed up some space for another move. Hopefully they do something soon and push forward to the playoffs.

Any contract brought in is subject to the same reduction so it's easier to just refer to the yearly dollar value.
