'Stripped of his living' seems an odd take for an 85 year old who's effectively made tens of millions off the back of Brian Williams being a dweeb after the Punch-Up in Piestany.

It’s cute you pretend they didn’t give him an ultimatum before they fired him. Cherry’s fate was 100% in his own hands much the same as Maclean’s.

You're right, it isn't the point. Don Cherry hasn't changed in the 30+ years he's been a fixture on HNIC. And Canadians continued to tune in to Coach's Corner. But he's a racist now, so lets forget that we made him into a celebrity and kept him there despite these views we (supposedly) disagree with. Move along, nothing to see here.

My hope is Cherry doesn't come back on air but is at the same time allowed to still be a much loved and respected figure in the game, he's an old man with some of the prejudices old men tend to develop but his lifetime of working and promoting hockey shouldn't be discounted either

I don’t get your point. Because Canadians “made him a celebrity” notwithstanding his views, he gets a pass when he steps over the line? Two wrongs make a right?

What’s a sad state for out culture? The fact Cherry gets called out and pays a price for saying something offensive? You think he should just get to say whatever he wants no matter what? That he’s entitled to his job?

I've started frequently skipped the first intermission on HNIC's first game, having no interest in listening to Don yell that players should be getting their sticks out of the way of shots, or loudly voice his certainty that linesmen throw out centres just so they can puff out their chests and make themselves important. Cherry deserved to be fired today because of his xenophobic comment, but he should have been more nobly put out to pasture a long time ago because he rarely had anything insightful to add about hockey.
The second intermission Headlines segment in the best part of any intermission. It should be moved to the first intermission, and the second should be a round-table discussion on the current game then an Out of Town Scoreboard discussion. They can ditch Burke's segment while they're cleaning house.

Good riddance. Should have been “retired” a decade ago.

I believe cannon7 is saying that since Don Cherry was tolerated decades for his contraversial slurs it's sad that the culture has changed to a politically correct
one, where he now got fired for them. The market has adjusted the price for saying things and Sportsnet obviously caves in based on what the price is.
Ultimately it's eroding, however slightly, the freedom of speech, which is why I don't like the firing.

Don't forget about complaining about players celebrating their own goals!

Yes I find it quite sad that it’s no longer appropriate to group people based on the colour of their skin and make inaccurate generalizations about them. /s
I wonder if anyone who’s complaining about PC culture here is actually a visible minority.

Cherry made a stupid comment, again, but let's respond to what he actually said which did not include any remarks about the colour of anyone's skin. Don't become Peter Mansbridge and make it about something he did not say.

Except it's not eroding free speech at all. He's not going to go to jail over this and he has a right to continuing saying it if he wants. But he doesn't have a right to be employed and say whatever he wants.

mmm I don't think anyone is saying it's not a stupid thing to say. But was it severe enough to get him fired for, that's the question.
And freedom of speech isn't limited only by going to jail. It's limited first by the cost of saying things getting bigger. Don Cherry lost his job which he obviously hadn't lost before. What's next and where does it stop?

Nope, you're still not understanding what "freedom of speech" is.

It stops there. At his job loss. He’s free to start his own show. That’s freedom of speech.

Again...most folks feel that this is likely the straw that broke the camel's back in specific regards to Cherry and the things he's had to say over the years.

Don Cherry was a second rate hockey player and an even worse coach, I just don’t get why anyone listened to anything he had to say.
