It is only a business decision because the culture makes it costly not to fire him.

What? You mean these mega corporations don't actually care about values? I'm beyond shocked.

Quite frankly, Don has been given chance, after chance, after chance, after chance. I think the nation has been quite patient with him over the years. However, at some point you just have to say "You are too detrimental to our brand to keep on board". When it becomes impossible to defend his comments, and he refuses to even acknowledge that he crossed a line, that's someone that doesn't have a place in media.
Anyone that works in media needs to be cognizant of the impact they can have on a population. If you are a major public figure, you have influence, both for good and bad. That means you have a responsibility to your position of power as well. If someone points out to you that statements you make from your position of power can cause harm to the social structure, or can cause discord amongst the populace, AND you refuse to acknowledge that harm or impact? Sorry, I've got no time for you.
If you have power you must learn to use it responsibly. That means occasionally saying you're sorry for something that is divisive and insensitive. Nobody is above an apology once in a while.
Did he deserve to be fired for what he said? Probably not if that was the only incident. Problem is, it wasn't. But I'll allow that he could have been kept on if only he had the grace and humility to issue an apology and clarify his remarks. He didn't, he wouldn't, he never will. He needed to go. End of story.
Was I well-armed enough for you?

I disagree that Don didn’t deserve to be fired 20 years ago, pain in the ass changing the Channel every first period break when watching HNIC for the past 25 years or so.

What's more important:
1) That he still feels the same way but apologizes for it
2) He realizes the error in his ways but doesn't apologize

Let's keep it simple:
Poll question: Do you agree with Sportsnet firing Don Cherry?
or, Should Don Cherry have been fired?

And yet some, like me, tuned into their early broadcasts ONLY to see him. Now? Guess I won't.
Haven't read this whole thread, and I'm not going to bother... but this is just too much social sensitivity for me.
Oh well. To each their own.

Sportsnet very reluctantly brought him back the summer. Likely with the caveat that he would be on a very, very short leash.
People will get over it.

Ok, you want option 3:
He realizes the error in his ways and apologizes.
Now that he's been stripped of his living, how likely do you think that outcome is? And is that the extent of his penance?

Does anyone still watch HNIC to see Coach's Corner? I feel like that segment hasn't been relevant in over 10 years. Not gonna miss him butchering last names or hating on European and French Canadian players for wearing visors or lying on the ice when they're injured.

That doesn’t matter as this isn’t any old person. He’s a public figure who makes a living spreading his thoughts to Canadians on Saturday night. It doesn’t matter if this makes Cherry more racist, as that isn’t the point.

I believe in the Jays.

Regardless of the why HNiC just got better. Cherry didn't provide anything of value and hasn't for decades.

I have signed photo of Don from his Bruins coaching days. I use to always watch him. Now I might see him once every 2 months, and then it’s just by accident. Loved the guy, but his time has come to move on. Build a podcast, or a YouTube channel, he’ll be ok.

I will miss Don Cherry. I understand things change with time, but I still like “old school” mentalities. Don always brought the old school thinking. He maybe wasn’t as relevant as he was, but I found it entertaining.

Yeah, to each their own. I tuned into HNIC to, you know, watch hockey.
