Immigrants don't care about any of this. Most probably don't even know who Don Cherry is. This is the most virtuous of virtue signals and nothing more. Cancel culture claims another.

The Cathal Kelly take. Well worth the read:

There are literally immigrants in this very thread saying that Cherry's comments offended them.

It seems arbitrary to draw the line here, I guess that's my only thing. A 'Grapes is Racist' scandal usually signals the approach of Christmas.

Yeah, don't bother quoting anyone since no one said that.

Of course not wearing a poppy is free expression. Saying stupid, xenophobic and nationalistic things is free expression, too. Or at least it should be. Sadly Canada is creeping towards PRC-style controlled speech and this is a high profile example of the price you pay for stepping out of line. The goal posts of politically correct discourse will continue to shift and will eventually insnare even those who cheer this trend on.

Yeah I've lived a good portion of my life being referred to as "you people", "your kind" or some flat out racist slur. I've been lumped in with other cultures that are not remotely similar to mine just because some moron is too lazy to no the difference. Then when I've pointed it out I hear "nahh whatever man, you guys are all the same."

Last thing I want to hear is some senile racist talk down to me and "people like me" about wearing a poppy. I actually didn't wear a poppy this year. Mostly because I don't carry cash with me and also because as a Canadian citizen, I have the right to celebrate whatever holiday I want in whatever way I chose to.

It's free speech on personal time not work time
Id be fired too if I spoke at a seminar or workshop this way, even off to the side.

And Cherry is free to continue to do just that.

Sportsnet just doesn't want it to be on their dime. Which is also their right as his employer.

I'm an immigrant. This is a hockey forum, not exactly representative of the demographic.

I don’t see Don Cherry getting arrested, did you? This is purely a business decision and has nothing to do with freedom of expression.

SN has every right as a privately-held corporation. It's just a sad state for the culture, IMO. But then again, I love freedom more than watching my enemies suffer.

Seems like an appropriate place for this...

I live in Vancouver and was out this morning (between 8:40 and 10:30) and did a completely objective (but obviously not at all scientifically or statistically representative) visual survey. I did not include runners, cyclists, or babies. Five people out of 282 were wearing poppies … three "white" men and two "white" women. Roughly a quarter of the people I saw were "white". I was disgusted by the primary conclusion to be made, that being how few people in general were without a poppy. Again, I get that this is hardly something to draw any thought changing conclusion from.

In Cherry's comments I believe he did say in downtown Toronto "nobody" wears a poppy. Such ignorance seems to exist here in Vancouver as well.

I obviously don't usually (as in never) look at such things, and only did because of the backlash.

I attended an 11 o' clock Remembrance Day service at the closest cemetery/cenotaph and predictably the numbers were far different with over 90% in attendance wearing a poppy. There was however only one South Asian family there, one East Asian family there and one "African-Canadian" family there, and the rest being of some sort of European decent.

Just sayin ...
I also conducted a "visual survey" of the ceremonies in Vancouver and Surrey. Miraculously found many people who don't appear to be some sort of European decent.

Maybe you only saw what you were looking to see. Just sayin...

Corporations are bottom line oriented.

Cherry is bound to resurface somewhere, if a company believes that it will be a profitable venture.

There's a lot of different lens that people see culture through, which is one of the sad reasons for the divisiveness in our politics...

This isn't a Free Speech issue however; its a code of conduct issue. If Cherry feels like he was wrongfully terminated, i am sure there are legal avenues he can pursue

Cherry goes with - I coulda been talking about Irish or Scottish people.

So his look around Mississauga, he’s suggesting he could have been talking about about all those New Canadians who have come here Scotland or Ireland nor wearing poppies. It’s everyone else that’s interpreting it as not being Irish or Scottish people. Yep, adds up! lololol!!!

So Cherry's excuse comes down to "well, I could have been talking about white European immigrants, and then that would have been fine!"

Jeez, way to entirely miss the point, dude.
