He would've had to defend his gay rights comments and actions prior, sure, but this election goes to show how previous misdoings (blackface) don't seem to hold as water as people or media dramatically think so or vote on in the end.
Not saying they would've won, but if Kenney or someone from the CPC came out guns blazing at Trudeau, there would be a lot more doubt in some of the fence sitters minds not just about Trudeau, but also positive about the guy who would be launching the offensive.

There’s a difference between bad deeds in the past by a guy who is probably not going to trample minority rights and bad deeds in the past by a guy voters worry would do just that.

SNC is typical government shenanigans I wasn't willing to vote a conservative into power over. Like, seriously. I'm going to vote for a guy who will make it his mission to bust unions because the other guy put pressure on the government lawyer to ease off a Canadian company to protect Canadian jobs? Not happening.
As far as blackface... not single friend of mine of colour thought it was an issue. To a person their response was almost always a version of: "he apologized and meant it, who cares". I'm not going to be a fake "woke" white person deciding to take offense on someone elses behalf who doesn't care about an issue.
The fact is Trudeas done a mostly fine job as PM and these scandals cost him a majority government. Seems like democracy is fine to me.

Just looking at some of the Ontario results, the Cons got hammered in the 905 area. I really thought some of those races would be closer.

I was thinking this as well. Unfortunately, I don't have the interest, time or whatever else to get that involved in politics. So I guess I get what I deserve. Maybe "we" need to become less apathetic going forward to try counter the old bible thumpers.

1. Judging by previous posts it seems you struggle looking outside your own purview; that could be a reason
2. That's how bad Andrew Scheer was as a candidate. The Cons needs to lance the podunks from the party.

The last time I voted in a convention was to try and ensure that Ted Morton didn’t get in (though I didn’t vote for the winner).

At least the Liberals can’t use their committee majorities to shutdown investigations any longer, that’s a positive.
