Give me a break. They're not mutually exclusive. It's still possible to make bad trades, while still having overall success. This is asset management we're talking about here.

If you trade Janko for Carey Price it would be a bad deal for the Flames because Janko would score more goals
Your logic

Help, save, whatever.

Hah!
I just saw Reimer put up 47 saves against the Panthers for the Canes! Love that.
So far Bob ain't looking so hot. What is this? The first year of a 7 year deal?

The ultimate goal is winning the cup? Balderdash, it's far more important to be visually better.

Asset management lol...any team could have had Neal this summer by simply taking his contract. No takers

If Lucic's presence helps them win the Cup and the Oilers still miss the playoffs then yes it is a good deal.
It's not shocking at all that a player's point production would increase on a worse team with a bigger role.

There’s always gonna be some hack dumping in 20-30 goals with McDavid. Heck we just saw it... see: Chiasson, Alex. It’s the new “playing with the Sedin’s”. It just happens to be Neal right now, and guess what... he wouldn’t have done it in Calgary.

Neal was never going to be a 30 goal scorer here. He didn't fit well in the top 6 at all and he can't carry his own line. He can flourish playing triggerman with McDavid but he was never going to do that here.
On a side note, I liked Lucic tonight. Sure he didn't score 4 goals but his fight with MacDermid and hits on Martinez really turned the game around and gave us a point I don't think we deserved.

If we trade a 2nd round pick for a 5th round pick but still win the Stanley Cup it’s still a bad trade.

Come on man, not the same at all
The scenario was the Flames winning the cup with Lucic in the lineup contributing (hint: goals aren't the only way to contribute)

I think we’d be lying if we said we expected Lucic to outscore Neal this year. I also think we’d be lying if we said Neal would have bounced back here. He wasn’t a fit. Teams trade because both teams feel the deals will benefit their teams. Neal might pot 20-25 goals this year but that doesn’t matter. He wasn’t going to do it on the third line here, and no, it wasn’t Peters fault. Neal was awful. Good luck to him but good bye.
We need to move on.

Sharts are 0-4 to start the season. So, that's nice.
They have a -12 goal differential. No other team is in the double digits either positive or negative.

Well, since the Flames haven’t yet won the cup Schroedinger’s Neal suggests that the Flames could win the cup with Neal too.
Wonder what Holland could get for Neal just 3 games in, man?

Do not discount the importance of goals a player can produce. Trading him for a player who can't contribute offensively is bad asset management. That trade was under assumption that Neal wouldn't get his offensive prowess back. Neal is showing thus far that may have been foolish thinking.
|
I don't believe this is at all true. After the trade Treliving spoke a lot about Neal getting more opportunity in Edmonton, about his being a poor fit in Calgary, and how Lucic addressed a need he could not fill. The entire reason for attaching the condition of a third-round pick on the deal was made precisely because the Flames saw the likelihood of Neal regaining some of his scoring touch. Lots of posters here have spoken about how they expect him to score +10 or +!5 this year.
The trade was under the assumption that Lucic and his terrible contract were more valuable to the Flames than James Neal. That is all.

Well it's confirmed. The Ducks and the Oilers are the best team in the Pacific, and the Sharks are bottom feeders due to finish last in the league.
