Lucic isn't going to make the Flames win more games, whereas there's a case where Neal could for the Oilers if he actually scores this season.

Since we are playing in this magical imaginary " what if" wonderland, Neal staying on with the Flames again this year does not mean he does or does not score as many as he did or is with Edmonton. What's done is done and who gives a rat's ass about the Oilers . I dont think Oiler fans are as obsessed with the Oilers as much as Flames fans.

It's a long, long 4 years...still a lot more nervous about mid 30s Lucic than mid 30s Neal.

What if the Flames win fewer than they did last year and the Oilers win more than they did last year?

Flames fans are obsessed with the Oilers
Oiler fans are stuck in the past
Jets fans wanna fight with everyone
Montreal fans are entitled
Toronto fans are homers who barely know anything outside their team
Canuck fans are bandwagon jumpers who literally burn their city down when things don't go their way
Sens fans are nothing. No one cares about Sens fans
These are the truths of Canadian fan bases.

All Neal is doing is making sure the Oilers don't get a top 10 pick...thanks James!

And?
If the Flames do better this season (get past the first round) then its a good deal. Lucic can be a big part of that while not scoring much
If Neal makes the Oilers 5 points better who gives a ####...it actually hurts them long term

Flames could win the cup, and it still wouldn't be a good deal if Neal scores 30 goals.
Do not discount the importance of goals a player can produce. Trading him for a player who can't contribute offensively is bad asset management. That trade was under assumption that Neal wouldn't get his offensive prowess back. Neal is showing thus far that may have been foolish thinking.

So by default if you trade Monahan for say Ryan Reaves, and Flames win the cup although Monahan scores 30 this season, and Reaves score 10, you'll still consider it a good trade?
Give me a break. They're not mutually exclusive. It's still possible to make bad trades, while still having overall success. This is asset management we're talking about here.

A good trade is one that makes your team better. If the Flames win the cup, that's the whole ####ing point. Who cares how many goals Neal scores?

what a horrible take...Flames win the cup with Lucic crashing and banging and its a grand slam home run
bad asset management? obviously there weren't any other teams that wanted Neal
Are the other 3 teams that let him go dumb too?
