Interesting that they say the original intention was to get him signed for as long as possible, but the shorter term allowed them to fit him under the cap without needing to trade away a key piece from the team.
This has been speculated about all summer, so it's nice to see this confirmed.

Four years. And you are completely missing the point of my response.
Yes four years. My mistake.
I believe your point was that St Louis would be a bad team in four years time based on your list of who would be on their roster. Did I get that right?
I think your list will be highly inaccurate and difficult to predict how good a team will be in four years as you don't know who their players will be. It's silly to argue about really. It's four years away. Maybe he will join Gaudreau in Philly, playing on McDavid's line.
Congrats, my son who is 7 now his middle name is Jarome and I contacted the Flames and the Flames sent me an autographed pic with Jarome welcoming my son into the world. Classy organization!
That's a very cool story. Thanks for sharing. Doesn't surprise me the Flames would do that. Classy organization all the way

Not exactly. It wasn't abundantly clear, but the point was to show that 1) predicting the quality of rosters four years out is a fool's errand; 2) predicting the wishes of a young player four years out is even moreso foolish.
Who knows what happens in four years? Who knows what Matthew Tkachuk will want to do by then?

And then immediately mentions that Tkachuk had said to him he didn’t want to lose a team mate. All class, both of them.

#Flames forward Matthew Tkachuk was reluctant to reveal his first purchase with his new contract: "I offered to get the ticket in the (airport) parking today from (Flames VP of communications) Pete (Peter Hanlon) but I think they put it on the team card."
