I have always had this concern. But there are only a handful of truly elite centers in the league. Not everyone can have a MacKinnon. And Monahan is, despite not being on that level, a bona fide #1. He just needs Johnny to play better than he's playing in order to be effective.

Flames lack having a impact player that can hold their own physically. Gaudreau is too small and too soft to be that player. No response for MacKinnon on the other side.
I completely disagree with this. Gaudreau is fully capable of taking over a game. He may be a half step below MacKinnon as a threat, but no more than that. The problem is that he is not playing that way at the moment. Whatever it is - the yips, gripping the stick, nervousness, who cares - he isn't at anything like his best.

Up the intensity but let it loose out there. Stay together, play Flames hockey.

These players need to get mad. Like Tampa, too much easy hockey in the season is negatively impacting their ability to compete.
Still time to figure it out but very concerning.

Let me preface this by saying the Flames are losing after that period regardless of how the refs call it...

However, right now in the NHL, slashing is ok but hooking isn’t. If Fantenberg slashes MacKinnon he likely gets away with it, like MacKinnon does against Gaudreau when got back on him toward the end of the period. Instead, he gets his stick UP into the hands, rather feebly I might add, and gets a weak penalty called against him.

Watching NHL referees call a game can be intensely frustrating.

i don't see that from calgary's best players...
Agreed. What the Flames appear most to be missing right now is leadership. Nobody has stepped up so far.

Why wouldnt they talk about the players who have scored and dominating the series?

I don't think its fair to compare Monahan to MacKinnon. There are very few organizations with a #1C as good as MacKinnon.

Also, I think Monahan has been far from the problem tonight.

The Avs are skating at warp speed through the neutral uncontested.

The Flames are skating through sand and getting mauled.

I still haven't seen a replay of the too many men, easy to blame the refs, but a 5 on 3 is a gift at that point. The momentum definitely shifted from that point on. Flames have to be better.

The calls have been confusing. We saw in the Toronto game a bit of a crack down. It looked like that they were cracking down for this one, then they let other stuff go.

Need to dig in here.

In just about every series I’m appalled at the officiating.

Debrusk used “playoff hockey” officiating to play Kadri like a fiddle.

Mackinnon makes a back check and he’s a beast, but if you defend Mackinnon with one hand on your stick it’s a penalty.

Johnny gets whacked & hacked and hey... it’s the playoffs!

Hockey culture & the crony dinosaurs who control it infuriate me.

Why are the rules different in September vs. April or the 1st period vs. overtime?

It’s a joke.

With the speed and skill now, call the rules.

The team needs to be tougher. They are getting worked by the Avs.

It’s a double edged sword though as the Flames seem to get called for everything.
