It seems to me that all NHL teams are defending opposition teams star players in this way. Slashing, hooking , cross-checking and holding. This
includes the Oilers current Hitchcock coached "trapping" Oilers. This is a simple case of the Oilers asking for better treatment because they have McDavid. If all of this behavior is called, the Oilers may find themselves in the penalty box more than their opponents.

The margins can be pretty thin between foul/no-call. It's a bit like line play in football - there could be a call on almost every single play...but the game would be unwatchable if they followed the book.
It's also a matter of quantity - NBA refs have way more close-calls to determine than in any other sport. No officials in any sport get credit for the good calls, but the NBA stands out because a ref might make 20 bad calls in a game. If they work out 15-5 between the teams, it probably only means a couple of points.
In hockey, one more bad call for either team can be the biggest factor in the outcome.

A million times this. I'm always in awe of how intense the competitors are with each other without raising so much as an eyebrow to an official.

I'm sure GG's having a blast going from small town prairie bro MacLellan to being Ken "I'm the mastermind with all the answers to solve this team if everybody does exactly as I say" Hitchcock's minion.

Oilers fans and media are now losing their collective minds because Ryan Rishaug had the audacity to say that McDavid also gets away with a lot of hooking and holding.
I’d love to see that video. He does get away with murder.

The Oilers subreddit is also a great source of laughs. They seem to be in agreement Chiasson is the next Burrows

If anything, Chaisson is might be the next Chris Clark when he went to Washington.

You guys have it all wrong.
Good Spock (Gulutzan in Calgary):
Evil Spock (Gulutzan in Edmonton):
You can't work for the Edmonton Oilers and not grow a bad guy beard. Just ask Todd MacLellan. I swear I never noticed his beard in San Jose, but in Edmonton it just seemed to stand out.
