I'm not a fan of Fox going the other way, but clearly he wasn't set on signing with the Flames. The Flames got younger today and a hopefully better for the future. I wasn't as big a fan of Ferland as some are. He scored 2 goals in the last 35 games. But I was more shocked to see that he had zero multi-goal games and zero GWG. Selling on him while his value was high was the right move.

Lindholm > Ferland. This is a CLEAR upgrade on offence in the top 6. Lindholm has a much higher ceiling and will get time with very good players.

Where I feel is the biggest risk is trading away Hamilton. He was the heir apparent for when Gio would start to lose a step. Yes he has warts in his game, but he's clearly got the best toolbox on the entire Flames D and was trending to putting it together. Huge risk to trade away a D like that.

Hamilton > Hanifin. But Hanifin is no slouch either. He's been trending in the right direction and could be ready to take the next step.

The Flames lost the best player with the highest ceiling, but I think it helps the Flames overall depth.

I’m going to be really happy for Ferland when he cashes in this year. The guy deserves it after working his butt off to dig out of that hole.

I’ll also be happy the Flames don’t hold that contract though.

Well... at 6’3”, Hanifin does have a longer way to go to reach the ceiling than Hamilton at 6’6”, so... he’s technically not wrong.

Lindholm is extremely reliable in both ends of the rink...Sam not so much.

Yeah I dont mind ferland and hamilton out but its the value that I hate. Hamonic is worth a 1st and two seconds then hamilton should have been worth a kings ransom.

Feels like treliving overpaid for Hamonic and underachived on his return for Hamilton.

I really like the players coming in but this is like a feaster trade value wise.

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but this should have happened a long time ago — both guys have been on our roster the entire time.

Instead, we:

- overpay for a right shot Hamonic because Gulutzan was obsessed with left right pairings
- clog up the right side by re-signing Stone as well, with Andersson ripening in Stockton
- Trade our biggest blue line trade asset along with one of our best RH defence prospects

Seems like Treliving keeps overpaying to solve a problem that Treliving created in the first place...

Lindholm is better than Ferland. 100%

Hanifin MAY excel to be as good as Hamilton. MAYBE.

Fox is one of the top rated dmen in the NCAA, and is worth WAY more than a throw in because he might not sign. I mentioned it in the other thread; Erixon got us 2 seconds and Roman Horak.

Do the math, and at this moment we lost. Big time. Maybe in the end we come out on top, but as they say...a bird in hand is worth 2 in the bush. Hamilton is worth FAR more than Hanifin, let elone Hamilton PLUS Fox to even out Lindholm/Ferland.

This trade straight up sucks.

Treliving in his year-end PC said the core is off and needs a change. He traded Hamilton, one of his core players. I would say that counts as fairly convincing circumstantial evidence that the team was not enamoured with Hamilton. This is not”pure speculation.”

I think it comes down to what people think of Hamilton.

Franchise D or a guy that has the tools to be one but continues to dissapoint. Outside of his goal scoring his game is quite bad. Guy looks lazy, takes careless penalties and would get tuned by Paul Byron. Similar to what Bouwmeester was here. Big body wasted.

To me Hamilton is not a guy you go to war with so i dont undestand the franchise D talk. I'm ok to see him go.

So for me this trade works as follows:

I like the players we got in Hanifin and Lindholm.

I don't mind trading Dougie or Ferland.

I really don't like having to include Fox to get the deal done.

So overall I still am a "Meh" on the trade but mostly because I hate when you have deals that you give up the best player and the best prospect...that should never happen.

Since he's likely full grown and 3" shorter you could say he's wrong on all counts.

Yup exactly we knew a core player was going to be moving at some point.

I don't care that he's a left wing, the Flames need to sign JVR

After my initial the world is ending reaction. I’m warming up to the trade. I still hate giving up Fox but if the rumours are true he was going to be difficult to sign then it softens the blow a bit.

With a competent center for Bennett hopefully we can stop forcing Bennett to play as centre and move him to wing

2018 Hanifin does not equal 2018 Hamilton. But career-wise, Hanifin has at least as much potential as Hamilton, and after his 1st 3 years, has shown pretty much exactly as much.

He is a better skater and projects to be a more complete player. Only question is: will he be able to put up as much offense?

Perfect! We need another 40 point 2 way forward. Heck he could even be 2016/17 Frolik, that will be huuuuuuge.
