Biggest difference was he shot 9.4% in Carolina, vs 13.3% in Minnesota. This year he shot 17.4% - which accounts for the next big jump up in his production.

Those two seasons in Carolina are the 1st and 3rd highest shooting percentages of his career, and he is an 11.2% career shooter.

That last season in Carolina where he lost all love of the game... he shot 6.5% - by far the lowest of his career.

So really he's a guy who has actually been good his whole career, but had one terrible shooting percentage season where he shot almost 5% below his career average and people thought he was washed up because of it.

But yeah it's all Bill Peters fault.

Are you arguing that it wasn't Peter's management skills that were in conflict with Staal but his High Corsi low shooting % system that drove Staal to question what he was doing playing hockey?

And all of these guys have not hit the point of having enough $$$ for life.

The Flames are well past the development phase. They have more than half the roster financial set for life no matter how well or bad they play.

The Flames have Kulak, Jankowski, Bennett, Tkachuk in the development phase of their career.

are you suggesting that Iginla did not play the best hockey of his career in Sutter's first year as coach 2003-2004.

Do you think Iginla would think any other year was better than 2004?

Nope, I'm suggesting that you cannot simply look at an individual player's stats before and after a coach and make a definitive indictment against that coach.

edit: But just for clarification I don't know what year he would have thought better, but I think the best hockey of his career was in 01-02.

Nope I was saying that coaching > love of his game > performance was not a straight and directly correlated line.

Trying to say all of it is because of a coach or a system is ludicrous. Even just looking at just offensive performance is a stupid way of looking at it.

Sutter is clearly a great coach, and his teams were successful, but players didn't have anywhere close to their best seasons from an individual production perspective under him.

Carter only joined the team after Sutter was coach and actually had his best seasons in Philadelphia.

Doughty had 59 points under Terry Murray, then only cracked 50 in one of 5 seasons under Sutter. Had 60 points for the first time in his career this season.

Dustin Brown was almost bought out because he declined so much under Sutter that he looked like a 30 point player, and now returned to 60 points after Sutter left.

Kopitar had the best individual production season this year in the first year after Sutter.

Quick has his best save percentage this season since the first season under Sutter.

So from an individual performance perspective these guys actually had better seasons this year but that doesn't mean Sutter is a bad coach, or that the team was actually any better than they were with Sutter. Sutter was a great coach that got these guys to sacrifice some individual performance for the good of the team.

I think sometimes people forget those Kings teams had a 101 pt season, and a 98 pt season the two years before Sutter got there before they added Richards and Carter. Sutter came in and got them success in the playoffs (which should be valued a lot) but he didn't make them any better of a team in the regular season.

Treliving was on PrimeTime Sports with McCowan and John Shannon.

Here are some bits.
- Difficult decision to fire Gully (“he’s a good coach and individual”)
- The under-performance this year is not solely his fault (“Blood on everyone’s hands”)
- Change was in order, one that was needed to be made.
- Can’t expect success by changing the coaching every two years
- Do you consult with players/captains? Ultimately Tre makes the call, but also filters info from the players. Not specifically their advice, but made own conclusions based on player feedback
- What does Bill do that Glen didn’t do? Lots of dancing around by Tre here, then says… Ultimately, Bill will be able to maximize performance; his ability to push what we have here is paramount. Got a good sense how he deals with players when they worked together briefly in 2016. (my interpretation: Gulutzan was too soft).
- Will we see changes to the roster? Evaluating right now, don’t need to ship 20 guys, but need to improve. Hoping for internal and looking for external growth (in depth). Everyone needs to be better including himself (Tre).
- Bob McCown question: Peters had an out-clause with CAR, which is not a normal scenario. Does he have to exercise that before you can talk to him?
Tre: True, unique clause, never had seen one like that before. Reached out to CAR to find out about the clause and requested permission to speak with Bill.
- John Shannon asks if Treliving will be in TO on Saturday for the draft lottery. *Awkward Pause***. Treliving says he will not be there. Shannon pretends that he didn’t realize the Flames don’t have a pick. LMAO. So weak by Shannon there.

Are you guys talking about Kelly Hrudey?
1. I never heard him pronounce it like that.
2. He is awesome at his job, which is why we keep losing him for local games so that he can be used on HNIC on Saturdays

1. I never heard him pronounce it like that.
2. He is awesome at his job, which is why we keep losing him for local games so that he can be used on HNIC on Saturdays

1. I have heard him pronounce it like that, but am surprised that anyone cares much.

Or maybe Shannon knows Treliving is going to make a splash!

As I've posted before it does kind of sound like Gullickson, but I don't think it's a big deal it's just kinda funny because I can't unhear it. But after putting up with the likes of Greg Millen or Glenn Healy aka "Bench Warmer" aka "Door Opener", among others; Kelly Hrudey is a godsend.

My brother-in-law's son played for Bill Peters when Bill was the coach in Spokane. I was talking to my bro-in-law earlier today and he had nothing but great things to say about Bill (described him as a very driven individual, but just an awesome guy as well).

I am more offended by Hrudey’s pronunciation of cal-GARY.

I’m not a Shannon fan usually but that’s not a bad little dig at Treliving there.
