I too would expect people to donate to the person that campaigns in their interests.

The only thing I can agree with Smith on is not releasing his list of donor as doing so would most certainly give rise to a witchhunt.

It wasn’t a smokescreen, it potentially was a hail mary. They wanted CalgaryNEXT but either didn’t want to put the time in to do it professionally, or didn’t know how. I think I have come to the realization they didn’t know how.

Honestly I think they thought Calgary was going to cream themselves at the mere mention of the project. When the obvious questions came flying on roads they said “don’t worry man” and thought it would be good enough. Then the remediation questions, more “don’t worry”

It was ill concieved and ill executed. Them side stepping the city was amateur, but they thought the will of the people would over ride good city governance. That never came. It was a total blunder and set us on the path we have today.

I don't think CalgaryNEXT was any sort of nefarious ploy or smokescreen. I think it was just a badly executed project lead by a guy with zero development experience.

Never attribute to malice that which is explained by incompetence.

Incompetence explains an awful lot of this.

I don't know what his role was or how long he was there but King had a stint with Walton Developments

Hanlon's razor perfectly explains what CSEC has been doing.

As somebody with absolutely no development background, what was terrible about CalgaryNEXT?

Haha, honestly I have been ignoring this whole arena discussion as I don't live in the city and it all just sounds depressing. Nvm

Whether it's incompetence or 26 dimensional checkers, I'm not especially impressed by the way Ken King and Murray Edwards have been jerking people in this city around.

I don't know how anyone can argue that the Flames put their best proposal forward in 2015 when even they updated the renderings to look significantly different from what was originally presented.

Here are the original renderings from 2015, which look like someone dropped a George Foreman Grill next to Bow Trail and called it a day: http://calgaryherald.com/sports/hock...a-stadium-plan

Here are the updated renderings from 2016: http://dailyhive.com/calgary/calgary...cost-city-hall

These look much nicer. The stadium actually looks like it would be a nice place to watch a game. The public-access space built over top of Bow Trail opens up the river front nicely.

I wonder how different the public reception would have been in 2015 if they had shown us the 2016 renderings then?

So I wasn't at the Dome last night, but saw that these were apparently on the screens there. Curious timing, same day the Globe story breaks.

I saw that at the game and thought paying for advertising at a flames game is going to rock the boat with some.

The main problem was cost it required 850 million of public investment into the arena plus 200 million in west village infrastructure. The CRL areas was not sufficient to recover the public cost and there was no real good way to build an arena district in the region. It's also created a dead zone between the back of the building and the riverbank and didn't solve the Bow trail alignment issues and prevented some of the solutions.

Running the numbers it would have been better to build an Arena and Fieldhouse separately and developing the area without them using the expanded CRL area and land sales to fund an arena and field house that is constructed else where
