Flames were a rebuilding team and traded a player in Granlund for a prospect in Shinkaruk. It's what rebuilding teams are expected to do.
At least we didn't spend a 1st round pick on Shinkaruk like the Canucks did.

Trading a 22 year old for a 19 year old is not a rebuilding trade it is a hockey trade. Granlund was quite possibly a player that the Flames would have waived the next year so they moved him for Shinkaruk who was having a very nice season in the AHL at the time.
In the short time after the deal it looked like a win for the Flames as Shinkaruk looked reasonably decent in his small audition with the team. Last year however Granlund solidified himself as a NHL player and scored 19 goals. Shinkaruk took a step back. Granlund gets protected by Vancouver and Shinkaruk gets waived by the Flames.

For those pissing on Granlund and his 19 goals in 69 games, do you actually believe Hunter Shinkaruk would score 19 on the Canucks with the same ice time? Give the guy some credit.
I mean I was so relieved when the Flames passed on Hunter during his draft year. Thought it was a stupid trade when it happened. Now looks even worse.
Kris Versteeg had 15 goals in 69 games. He is generally looked as a great signing.
Thing that was annoying even at the time was Treliving stating Granlund was no good on the wing and had to play center. Except he never played wing with the Flames. Thing is he is being used as a winger in Vancouver. Could have been a good option to play with Sam Bennett now. The guy is only 24, who knows what his ceiling is. Nobody can argue that 19 goals for a 900K cap hit is great value.

Lets call a spade a spade. Looking back at the grandlund trade it was a win for canucks and loss for flames.

Didn't Treliving say the opposite?
They approached Granlund in the A to have him play more wing but he wasn't keen on the idea so they kept him at center.

Sure, there will be other deals that won't workout for the Flames.
Its the risk of being a GM.

Yes. The canucks won the trade. If a similar opportunity arises again, I would want the flames GM to make the move again.
Betting on a prospect's potential is always a risk, but when the chip being used is coming from an organizational strength (ie. they have depth in that area) then it's a risk that could be worth taking.

So we find out if these guys (not Granlund, sorry for re-railing) clear waivers in 20 minutes or so?

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

i have a feeling at least 1 player will be picked off. Former 1st and 2nd rounders who aren't flat out busts, i'm sure some bottom feeder team is willing to try out a free asset.

I think I heard Wills this morning say that it costs the NHL club $50K to pick a player off waivers, is that true?

Yes all waiver claims have a cost associated with claming a player. The less time a player has played under a NHL contract the more it costs.
For a forward or defenceman with 2-5 years with a SPC:
2 years $67, 500
3 years $56, 250
4 years $41, 250
5 years $26, 260
For a goalie with 2-5 years with a SPC:
2 years $90, 000
3 years $75, 000
4 years $67, 500
5 years $63, 500
For all players with more than 5 years with a spc:
6 years $15 000
7 years $13, 125
8 years $11, 250
9 years $7, 500
more than 9 years $3, 375
unconditional waivers cost $125

is that cost incurred just put a claim in, or to the team that actually lands the player? I assume it's the latter...

But in the grand scheme of things this is more like losing a game of tiddlywinks with your sister than it is losing the SuperBowl.

At this point they ARE busts. Until they prove otherwise.

Still waiting on official word, but no one is reporting that any of these 3 guys have been claimed and usually if someone gets claimed word gets out right away.
