Even if they did expose Neal and did lose him, it's not for "nothing." It means they aren't losing Jarnkrok or Smith or Wilson or whoever Vegas would draft in lieu of Neal.
For a team that went to the Cup Finals but was outside of the top 10 in goal scoring during the regular season, losing a potential 30+ goal scoring Neal for a mid 2nd round pick and 20+ goal scoring Smith to the expansion draft would be a huge loss.
Not to mention, I think if they were to make Neal available in trade they could probably find a better taker, I mean why wouldn't Toronto beat that price and bring Neal home? They have the cap space and their 7 protected forward is going to be someone ####ty like Leipsic and Neal would be a huge upgrade on Hyman to play left wing for Matthews.

The bolded is what keeps getting lost in the 'expansion draft mayhem' - I don't think many of these bargains will be out there simply because if a team gives up a player they will lose another one. So while there will be some movement it will most likely be closer to fair market value and there won't be near as many trades as was being sold to us by the media for the last 6 months.

If the list comes out with Brouwer not protected I will feel much better about the guys in charge. The fact that they gave him that deal in the first place and constantly praise his efforts in a year he was terrible has me concerned. Brad just said today that he is a big body needed to contain a player like McDavid or Crosby, lol good luck with that
|
Yeah? What did he do against Getzlaf? Kesler? Perry? /anyone
Didn't see the use of a big body or any type of containing. Maybe containment to the defensive zone?
Brad and co. really, really need to stop talking in hypotheticals. Visual proof overrides reputation and past reputation. It's odd to say, but maybe it's time to take a page out of Jay Feaster's book and start speaking with some intellectual honesty rather than protecting guys that don't care enough to earn their contract on a team where most of everyone else has bought in.

It seems he is making it up on the "rift" front. I get it that he is a recent UFA signing, but exposing someone doesn't mean they are not wanted (even if that were true in Brouwer's case). Just business and Brouwer/Ferland/Stajan/Bouma/Kulak whomever surely know that.
|
Because the Flames don't have to expose Ferland.
The flames could theoretically expose Ferland only if Vegas takes Stajan off their hands.
If Vegas doesn't agree, Ferland does not get exposed, instead perhaps Brouwer does.
Not saying it will go down that way, just posting a hypothetical.
If Calgary isn't going to expose Brouwer, they will have to lose one of Ferland or Lazar. They may want to get something for losing that player in that case, as Vegas can never be certain if the Flames are bluffing.

@DarrenDreger: There is trade interest in Phaneuf. Final 4 yrs at $7-$6.5-$6.5-$6.5. Quality shutdown guy, but Sens likely to take contract/$ back.
Phaneuf has a NTC that allows him to name 12 teams he will accept trade to. Good luck Sens

Sens would need to eat nearly half of that dough in my opinion. I could see a place like Buffalo having some interest

So Dion is now a quality shutdown defender? If that's the case why are the Senators trying to unload him not long after acquiring him? I think they are trying to get out of that contract before they have to face the final three years as Phaneuf while not as bad as his detractors would have you believe is on a slow decline.

It is hard to imagine Eugene Melnyk willing to eat salary to trade Phaneuf. It was the fact he could play for the salary unlike Greening and Cowen that made the trade happen.
To be fair to Dion, he was great down the stretch and in the playoffs for Ottawa. It shows he's still got something as long as he's not the main guy. For four more years though?

This, the only place where pre draft trades will happen is when you are going to get fair value and the player you trade is by far the best of the exposed players. The value received would have to be more than the cost of paying Vegas to NOT take that player.
Or like dime a dozen players moving like what the caps acquired yesterday.

The reason they are looking to move him is to avoid leaving Methot or Ceci unprotected as those are the 3D they want to keep. Dion won't waive so they are looking to move him. Options would be slim on teams he is open to a trade to and have a D expansion slot open

2016/2017 Trade Speculation and Rumors
...if it weren't for the expansion rules, and if the acquisition cost were low, and if Ottawa retained 2.5M - I'd totally be into a Phaneuf reunion tour.

Dion at 4 million a season is crazy cheap. The guy is a legitimate top-4 defender on most teams.
He's overpaid by I'd say a million. He should be getting 5.5-6 million.

Considering what they got for Hall, who is 4 times the player Eberle is, I would calm the panic.

The reason why there is so much "interest" is that teams think they can get him for nothing.

Eberle for Phaneuf? Does that leave Eberle exposed to Vegas?
