And I think spector does have a couple of things right. Their AGM is a big Ferland fan, so much so that letting them take Ferland could net the Flames a better piece in more important areas like defense. Or gasp, a goalie.

Losing Ferland to to protect Brouwer in the expansion draft would be the PR nightmare. I'm fine with it in a hockey deal.
Anone that doesn't think the Flames have PR issues is living under a rock.

Sure, we whiffed on goaltending, but that is a tough position to fill.

They got swept by the Oilers and swept in the first round...then proceeded to threaten to move the team without tax payer money for a new arena. IF they bring back basically the same team how excited are people going to be?
Losing a player to protect Brouwer would be a disaster...I hope they are smarter then that

Talk about looking only at the negatives. Firstly, getting swept by the Oilers and moving the team aren't related... at all. We also lost the majority of the games against the Oilers during our slow start, had we played them during the second half of the season the results would have likely been different... Not that it's even important. We went from being a lottery team to a playoff team. That is success no matter how you look at it.
In regards to the team being moved. It's not happening, this is all strategy from both sides to get the best deal possible. I don't think anyone is really taking this seriously at this point.
Who said anything about bringing back the exact same team? Who said anything about protecting Brouwer and losing Ferland? These are hypotheticals that have no basis and you are CHOOSING to get worked up about them.

oh god, I never said the team was actually moving or getting swept by the Oilers had anything to do with it.
I am saying there haven't been a ton of positives around the team of late so said I somewhat expect for them to protect Brouwer and lose Ferland...which trust me would not go over well.
Go read the Flames season ticket renewal forum or the new arena forum and judge what hardcore flames fans think of the team right now....apply that to the general public. Apathy might be the key word, Flames need to make some positive noise. Can't wait for western jersey 2.0 next week lol

2 of the 4 games lost were in the second half of the season.
Not that that has anything to do with moving the team

"we sucked for the first half of the season" isn't much of an excuse anyway

I don't need to read a forum to inform my opinion. I can't fathom how any Flames fan isn't at the least cautiously optimistic about the team. Young core. Depth at centre. Solid pieces on defense. Lottery team to playoff team. This is the best positioned Flames team I've seen in the last 20 years, enjoy it.
Weitz: Thanks for that input. The latter two were close games, the first two losses were awful... could've been 3-1 or 2-2 easily if we had our #### together sooner.

The team won 45 games despite subpar goaltending for a good portion of the season, having a poor first half of the season and Monahan/Gaudreau having down seasons. If they receive slightly better goaltending and don't trip over themselves starting the season there's no reason they can't win 50+ games. A lot will depend on the goaltending tandem brought in as the Flames don't need a goaltender to stand on his head every night to win games like the Oilers as they have proven they can win 45 games with mediocre goaltending but better goaltending could be the difference between winning the division and starting the playoffs on the road.

What's the point? Where would he slot in on the wing?
The Flames will likely start next year with some sort of mix of the following players on the wing:
Gaudreau, Ferland, Tkachuk, Frolik, Versteeg, Lazar, Brouwer, Bouma, Hathaway, Shinkaruk
There's no room for a 1-goal winger who can't play defense or skate

Where is this better goal tending coming from though...options seem really limited. Also, need to re-sign or replace stone with a quality #4 just to get the D back to where it was. Then there is the high end RWer
lots of work to do...I would certainly feel a lot better if they address these needs, otherwise they are in for an average season with an average draft pick at the end.

Don't let the logout button hit you on the way out.
Just awful reading someone who looks at nothing but negatives. Sad part is, there are way too many like this on here. If following the team makes you feel this way, what's the point? Sounds like a fun pass time.

Funny thing is I have been called a homer on here a lot
anyway I am half joking...but as a life long Flames fan it would not surprise me in the least if the expansion draft turns out poorly for the Flames
If the list comes out with Brouwer not protected I will feel much better about the guys in charge. The fact that they gave him that deal in the first place and constantly praise his efforts in a year he was terrible has me concerned. Brad just said today that he is a big body needed to contain a player like McDavid or Crosby, lol good luck with that

Sorry, but that's a way too simple way of looking at it.
Even if they did expose Neal and did lose him, it's not for "nothing." It means they aren't losing Jarnkrok or Smith or Wilson or whoever Vegas would draft in lieu of Neal.
For a team that went to the Cup Finals but was outside of the top 10 in goal scoring during the regular season, losing a potential 30+ goal scoring Neal for a mid 2nd round pick and 20+ goal scoring Smith to the expansion draft would be a huge loss.
Not to mention, I think if they were to make Neal available in trade they could probably find a better taker, I mean why wouldn't Toronto beat that price and bring Neal home? They have the cap space and their 7 protected forward is going to be someone ####ty like Leipsic and Neal would be a huge upgrade on Hyman to play left wing for Matthews.
