I'd say the Flames bring in Hathaway into the lineup and sit Brouwer out to bring in more grit, toughness, and energy to the lineup. Win or lose, Flames need to send a message to the Ducks that it's gonna be nasty to the end. Bring in Lazar if another guy on the Flames is just staying in the shadows.

|
i was thinking Hathaway as well...the only concern i had was whether we'd be playing into the Ducks hands by leaning to their style of play with a guy like hathaway.
Guy is a warrior though and wouldn't back down from anyone
as for Wideman, normally, i wouldn't even consider it....but man, seeing Bart with the yips out there... he was between the dot and corner, and was passing the puck back to Engelland, who was stationed behind the net, to start the breakout.
Anaheim forecheckers were just entering the zone, so no pressure on Bart. Zero.
And he totally misses engelland...like with a pass as bad as you'd see in a beer league.... pucks sails pass engelland, who is totally caught off guard, into the far corner where, after a board battle, the Ducks win possession...
While nothing happened, that play was mind boggling... that's the kind of play that makes you a PTO guy
Add to that, Bart has trouble getting the puck into the right areas from the point... now maybe i am not giving the ducks enough credit, but i don't remember how many times Bart couldn't get the puck on net or even making the right decision to dump it deep instead.
maybe he'll be better at home, but he was quite worrisome last night

You know what would make me feel better? What would make us all feel better? A big Sharks win tonight. Actually seeing all the Canadians teams lose would do that. If Calgary doesn't win I don't want any of them to win. I'm petty that way, but it makes going to work next week easier.

This is a great idea.. you know I won't give a dime to the Flames to build an arena here but I'd give a large portion of my salary for them to build a new arena in Anaheim! Screw the Honda Center!

I would say Monahan has certainly been exceptional so far.
|
I noticed a couple times last night that Monahan was "standing his ground" so to speak with Kesler. Whereas in the past in felt like he didn't want to get involved. I guess I'm more referencing the after whistle stuff, I noticed that Monahan instead of skating away had no issues exchanging words with Kesler. Maybe not to the point of physical, face-washing accosting yet, but he's growing.
And on that note, did anyone else notice just before the Ferland/Bieska tilt that Bennett was giving Kesler the business and Kesler seemed like he wanted no part of it? Maybe it was just me but I woulda thought that that woulda been right up a spot picker like Kesler's alley going back after a younger player in the league without much fighting experience. Maybe Bennett is growing into a role that we all want/need.
All in all that exchange along with the scrap and Tkachuk's no back down attitude gives me hope for the future that maybe these "kids" won't take it anymore and won't be intimidated and pushed around anymore. They may not win this serious, but I think this experience/pushback bodes well for the future.

At the start of this year we would all agree we are still technically rebuilding. Now we are playing good hockey, but finding a way to lose in the playoffs. This series isnt over and we have a lot to be proud of, even more to look forward to in the upcoming seasons!
Cheer up and get behind the team. Game 3 has yet to be played and its at our rink. Some of you are acting like its the end of the world. Its not even the end of our season.
Its early and totally unecessary to nag about brouwer, refs, hamilton, brodie, gulutzan, elliott, bouma etc. We went on a huge winning streak and are blessed to just be in the playoffs. We arent cup contenders. We are a rebuilding team that squeeked into the playoffs after a bad start and are now developing our young core in the playoffs.

However, it could be neither. Would love to know who this Mr. Flames is that went off on Dougie. It sounded to me like 2 different voices.

It doesn't sound remotely close to either. My guess is there are several off-air people involved in the pack up process, so who knows.
Unfortunate incident, but good lord, people are allowed to have opinions and use whatever language they want when they assume they are off-air. These aren't politicans being caught talking inappropriately about constituents or anything.

The Flames aren't getting pushed around - they've been mentally weaker than the Ducks, not physically. It really has come down to discipline and taking bad penalties. That's been the difference in the series.

Someone with video editing talent should put together a clip from last night of all the calls vs. non-calls. It could be something like the Wonder Showzen bit "Funny, Not Funny":
MOD EDIT: Removed, that's not funny (or appropriate).
Only it would be "Penalty, Not Penalty".

Although the results are disappointing, the Flames haven't been that bad.
I agree with their assessment after game 1 in that the Flames gave the game away. Game two had two bad bounces lead to goals against and a no-goal that was pretty suspect. Sure dougie looks bad for taking a penalty, but as Gulutzan pointed out, what about hollzer holding chaison's stick in the second? Where the consistency in these calls, and how do you make that call in a tie game with 5 mins left? The Flames do have a point with these arguments. That said, the Flames have made critical errors that lead to goals against in both games. A hand full of guys need to be smarter. With some better judgement exercised by a couple players & a bounce that goes the other way in either game the Flames would have had the split.
I'm not throwing in the towel yet, but if they lose a game on home ice, they're done. Jonny's been taking some heat, but if you watch it the ducks are hitting him (with a stick or otherwise) every chance they get. Any chance they get to slash or cross check him, they take it. It's fine that Ferland is on the ice as well and he is doing his job, but the ducks won't be intimidated. They're just going to keep doing it because that's what it's going to take to beat the Flames.
Here's to hoping the Flames can ge some favourable matchups on home ice & go back to the pond tied. Jonny has the skill to change a game/series if the Flames can get him out against some lesser opposition. I don't think they are that far off.
Lastly I would get Hathaway up and have him target & take runs at perry, kesler, bieksa.

But what's a penalty? The definition/line seems to change at the will of the officials. They don't know what they can or can't get away with because it flips back and forth. That's the damn issue with this series.
The Dougie hold is borderline in regular season. What are we doing calling that late in a tied playoff game?

The Flames just have to get to a game 7, the Ducks will then have their own demons to deal with(they have lost 3 game 7s in a row, all at the Honda centre).
Two years ago the Flames played two blowout games and won game 3 in Calgary, they also came close in game 4 but lost do to bad goaltending. This is a much better team, they just have to raise their game again, cut out the mistakes to get back in this one.

Reading this thread I think its a good thing I drank too much last night and barely remember the game.
Vaguely remember Gaudreaus pathetic line change when he leisurely skated to the bench when the Flames were pressuring in the offensive zone. Wtf was that? Looked like he thought the whistle had gone but no one stopped playing? He must have realized it hadn't after a second but he didn't react like it....

Sorry smiggy, but Gaudfather and every other person who was screaming at Johnny to shoot was 100% correct. I would even go so far as to say he had an even better angle and easier shot last night than he did two years ago. He just has no confidence to shoot or something.
I mean look at the difference - Johnny ties it in 2015 from right next to the dot with Anderson on the edge of the crease. Last night Gibson was swimming in the blue paint and Johnny was another two steps in. He needs to shoot instead of being a Tanguay.

If you're Dougie Hamilton would you want to spend half the year traveling with someone who embarrassed and insulted you like that? If you're Freddie Hamilton would you not be pissed if someone essentially called your brother the R word? Criticism is one thing, but this went well beyond that.
Media people are held to a higher standard than the average fan. There's a certain responsibility that comes with the job, especially when you travel with the team and/or work for a rights holder (assuming that is the case). Whoever that was completely failed his employer. Embarrassing for him, insulting for the Hamilton and the Flames. Neither his employer or the Flames will stand for that.

Fair point and good comparison. I retract my statement. From the replays it just seemed like he didn't have much of a shot, but I do agree, his confidence is no where near where it was during the 2015 run.
