The reason we're so much better than last year with a lot of the same personnel? Tkachuk over Colborne, Elliot over Hiller and GG over Hartley.

I'm pumped. No one is playing above a level we've seen before so if no one disappears into another slump I think this team can take on any in the league.
Yeah. Once this team got through the disaster that was the first 15 or so games, many here have been saying that if Brodie, Johnny, Mony, Elliott and to a lesser degree Gio ever get going this team is going to be a tough out for anyone.

Well here we are.

Just added to FLA and TBL as those teams were red hot when the Flames met them even though they weren't on actual win streaks.

Agreed.

I believe it was in the third period when Kessel riffled a long pass up the ice behind Malkin (it was a crappy pass) to which Malkin drags his skate and kicks it up to his stick while gaining speed and breaking into the zone with a flames defensemen closing his gap on him. Pure skill and awesomeness. They are lucky/spoiled.

It's unsettling how fast Malkin is for such a big guy. Him and Crosby are a treat to watch.

Finished late on the PVR, great game.

This game and the Winnipeg game are a great example why this team isn't a pretender. They are actually good. We're not saying they're ready to contend, but this isn't a playoff bubble team anymore.

In the Winnipeg game, they didn't start great and the Monohan line wasn't having their best game. Then comes ol' mister reliable, Backlund and his line grabs hold of the game and seals it on the PP.

Last night, despite playing well the Backlund line was largely neutralized by playing against Crosby. Cue the Monohan line. At times they traded chances but those three drove the momentum for the Flames, with some great contributions from the 4th line.

This is a deep, well balanced team right now.

Random player notes.

Even without the goal, Wideman quietly had a good game last night.

I think Bartkowski is a robot programmed to make the safe play ever time. The guy takes no chances whatsoever, and rarely gets burned. I love it. Considering he was AHL fodder not long ago its amazing how he has fit in.

I want to find game tape of Engelland from his first year here. Because I'm convinced it's not the same player. Remember when he and Smid were black holes of everything hockey when their skates touched the ice? I don't know if he reinvented himself or something at some point, but his skating seems 500% better than when he first arrived and his reads on jumping into the play are not that of an overpaid plugger. He still has his limitations, but he has turned into a great #5 guy.

Insufferable how spotlight seeking he is.

I'm a little concerned about Boston. Always a tough game and Merchandise is right en fuego.
But hey, you know what's better than 10? 11!

The thing about Engelland for me was always that he needed minutes.

He isnt a goon, he can fight, but hes a very capable defenceman, but when hes only getting 3-5 minutes a night he could never really play his way into form.

Then Gio goes down and Engelland starts playing 12-14 minutes a night and all of a sudden we see the player we thought we were getting.

No kidding to the bold. I'm kind of hoping they can get him re-signed for another year or two. They will still need a solid tough defensive right shooting Dman for the bottom pairing even if/when they re-sign Stone.

If he can be had at a bit of a discount and short term then I'd be all over it. Very reliable team guy and bottom pairing Dman who can step up into the top 4 with Brodie for spot duty and not hurt you.

Hoply crap I just noticed Engelland played 24:43 last night. Against the defending Cup champs. Here are his last 4 games minutes played:

24:43 PIT
23:59 WPG
22:17 MTL
21:38 NYI

+3 with 1 goal and 1 assist.

He's engaged BEAST mode.

It is somewhat fitting that their 'Game of the Year' left them with nothing but a loser point.

52 stories on there, not a single mention of the Flames other than Johnny in the 1V1

If you skim everything, 99% of the stuff on there is on Eastern based teams. Even the fluff pieces is crap like Dreger talking about Nylanders favorite cereal. TSN knows their audience. Now that they have lost the majority of the NHL broadcast rights, the streamlining of their content is even more eastern centric than it was before. Its really too bad, I think their production quality was top notch.

TSN.ca was always my first stop when internetting. Now, aside from this "fact check" on your post, this is the first time I have visited in over a year.
