Even in Arizona fully auto are more than $500 and a lot harder to come by. An intense looking weapon can be manufactured for the consumer market that looks and feels like a fully auto (squeeze trigger, empty clip) but is actually a semi auto (one trigger squeeze, one round).

For instance, this gun https://www.gunsamerica.com/98390872...New-in-Box.htm looks just like a real AK-47 that is fully auto, but it's not. It's semi. 99.9% of those AR-15 guns you see out there are semi-auto. The price of a fully auto (without taking into account licensing and tax) are likely 10 times as much as the stuff you see at gun shops and gun shows.

Not my place to tell you what to say or feel. You're a big boy.

I'm saying that posting to literature that fusses over accurate AK47 reporting in the media in the hours after 6 Canadians are slaughtered pisses ME off.

at the end of the day all are still prohibited weapons in Canada.
I don't want to get into the big classification debate, but this is not quite right.

AK-47 = Fully automatic (hold down trigger and all the bullets come out), not legal in Canada for all intents and purposes.
AR-15 = Semi automatic (one trigger pull, one bullet), legal in Canada and is considered "restricted".

You don't think it's at least important as to whether the weapon that was used can be purchased legally, and whether or not it should be legal to purchase that weapon?

Why don't you tell me why it's so timely to talk about the model of the gun?...to speculate about it?...to debate about it? Why do people care right now that the media is sure to get the model number right?

Those details will come out in time...if that information leads to better policy that prevents future carnage then of course it's important. But that is not where we are at this point.

Fair enough... I am not interested in that debate either... lol...

just trying to understand why it matters that much to some folks... to me, its like hearing a drunk driver killed a bunch of folks... i don't particularly care what kind of car they drove if they are both mid sized sedans or SUVs...

now, if the vehicle was a Ferrari, it might change the optics of the story...

edit: the legality of the gun might be of some interest....if the gun is banned in Canada, authorities will need to trace it back to see how it was acquired. If the gun was legally purchased, it might open the door to whether or not it ought to be sold, albeit restricted, in Canada at all...

I dunno, I don't really care about the gun model, in particular. I do generally want people reporting the story to get the facts right, including the details. That's especially true of a story like this, which as we've already seen in less than 24 hours, is chaos. I also am not much moved by the argument that it's fine if they get the details wrong now because they can figure that stuff out later. I don't see what's wrong with insisting on accuracy.

Because, if the gun was purchased illegally, or legally, we can understand better - to some degree - the motives, and premeditation of this act, and can better determine if this was terrorism, a hate crime, or some other crime, and can determine better whether or not the weapon was purchased in Canada, or possibly crossed a border.

A lot of confusion is happening right now regarding who did this, and the motives behind it. It's frustrating and quite upsetting to not only not know what happened, but to hear so many different possibilities. For some people, knowing where the gun came from is important. What is important to me is that it is correct, and that I am not being influenced by some news source with a grudge and an agenda, regardless of which agenda it is.

This also probably matters to me more because I have a different emotional response to this than you do. I'm more saddened and exasperated by this than enraged, as you appear to be. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Give your head a shake
Of course its relevant, what kind of gun and/or how the gun was procured are important, this could lead into a gun control issue or other security concern that could lead to some risk mitigation in the future. Collecting the detail of an incident is crucial to eventually learning the right lessons going forward.

Not even close, a FA M-16 will run about $30k USD right now. You can sometimes find AR-15s for $10-$15k, sub guns like the HK-53 are usually in the same price range. The stuff you are getting for under $1000 is the Walmart grade, mass produced semi-auto variety. Even SA mil-spec goes for more in the US.

The model used yesterday doesn't matter NOW. But in a few days/weeks when the anti-firearms lobby gets going, it will matter a great deal. There are certain people within that group who have no qualms about omitting facts, twisting facts and outright lying to advance their agenda. When the discussion happens, it should be with actual facts and with no lying.

AR-15s range anywhere 600 to 2500 US depending on how you customize it... the AR is basically a platform or deck that one can fit out however they want.

have no idea where the 10-15K number is coming from..."Walmart grade" or not, the are still lethal.

the guns being used in US mass shootings don't deviate from the price I posted above...

people on the fringes of society who end up doing these things don't usually have 10-15k just sitting in the bank....

He was talking about full-auto. Very big difference between that and semis, even in the US.

I'm not even sure why someone would want full auto unless it's a tripod mounted machine gun.

Yup. Basically there are two classes.

Pre-ban (prior to 1986) can be owned by civilians, so long as you get the required ATF background checks and tax stamps. Prices for good firearms are in the tens of thousands.

Post-ban (after 1986) is basically reserved for LEO, military and FFL holders with LE demo letters. There are significantly cheaper (AR can be had for maybe $2,000) simply because civilians can't own them.
