There were 2 types. Both were yummy

The licorice version was amazingly around for about 6 years under the "N" name until changed to Licorice Babies

The Chocolate Babies only used the "N" name for a short time I believe.

There was also "N" named licorice cigarette candy in the early 60's

Spoiler!

hard to believe how common it was to slap a child in the head.
when I was young, and a kid was acting up, you'd often see the parent cuff the kid in the back of the head.
If I saw someone do that now, I'd probably say something and threaten to call the cops.

Society needs a whole lot more kids getting cuffed in the back of the head by their parents

Our elementary principal used to pull the girls ponytails. Good, ol' Mr Bernie, pulling the girls pony tails! Nobody cared. He'd be sued right off the planet if he tried that these days.

We called it bum's up, but from what I understand it had a different name at every school/community.

Well before my time, but I recall reading how when x-ray technology became a new thing, people were using them willy-nilly for fun. I heard that higher end shoe stores would x-ray people's feet to ensure a great fit.

wooden spoons, leather belts, and multiple hits to the head, back, and butt.

all in the name of child discipline, and I've had more than my share of them all.

oh yeah and bumper sledding where you would jump behind cars when they had to stop at stop signs, and hold onto the bumper and slide on your shoes or boots down a snowy street. When I think about it now...crazy. sudden stops, the road getting a dry or sandy patch, and even other cars on the road.

In high school at the end of the year we would have a "Battle Of The Sexes" competition. It was a bunch of games like tug of war and floor hockey. The boys were usually handicapped somehow to make it more fair. There was also mud wrestling, in bathing suits.

Try going to a catholic school run by Nuns. When our house burned down in Winnipeg when I was a little kid my parents shipped me off to Coaldale to stay with my grandparents while they rebuilt. I was doubly cursed at the school I was at. First I was left handed, second I was a mouthy little bastard. It didn't take them long to start smacking me on the hand and the back of the head with the old pointer of destiny.

And if you got really out of control it was off to the principals office run by a not so kindly young priest who would wack the crap of of your hand with the leather belt that could break the sound barrier.

To me the most drastic change is smoking in public. Now when I walk outside and someone is smoking I almost hold my breath while walking by because it bothers me. I remember in the mid-90's working at a place where there was this greasy, fat dude that would always finish his lunch first at the lunch table and start smoking while the rest of us were eating. His favorite saying was; "would you mind not eating while I smoke". Just disgusting but in those days totally normal for a person to be exhaling smoke in your direction while you were eating or talking, etc. There were guys that smoked all day at work in their cubicles and the roof above them would have a big yellow circle. It was more common to be around 2nd hand smoke than clean air and that was only 20 years ago.

Fighting in school (Beddington as well, I believe Jiri is a year older than me). There were fights almost every day at lunch or recess. I was involved in many. The worst you ever got was a lecture from a teacher, maybe a trip to the principal's office if you had been in a few recently. My nose always bled, so I usually ended up in the office trying to stop my nose bleed.

I remember bums up. If enough people were playing, you could end up with a really red ass. Some kids had bad aim, but really good arms so yo'd also take a tennis ball off the back of your head a few times.

Since this has turned into a nostalgia thread, I remember us affixing skateboard wheels to a GT and racing them down streets in the summer time. This was done with the renowned craftsmanship of a 12 year old, so sometimes a wheel or two would fall off half way down.

We first tried them on bike path hills, and then when that got boring, we raced down residential streets (plenty of seizable ones in the NW). The GT brakes were useless on concrete so if you wanted to stop you either ran out of hill, or you bailed.

I don't even want to think what would've happened if we hit a parked car, never mind a moving one.

Bum's up, or Red A$$!!

I had a friend incorporate this into his stag just a few years ago. Everyone loved it.

We played it with outs and on your 3rd out, the person who go the 3rd out would get a free throw at you against the wall at a pre determined distance.

Also, if you roofed the ball, everyone playing would get a throw at you.

In typing this, I feel the urge to play. Someone organize a CP game.
