Playgrounds are terrible nowadays, I'm not even allowed within 50ft of one.

I can remeber being 6 and climbing to the top, only to get cold feet and realize I was too scared to climb down. I remember yelling help at the top of my lungs. Of course the 9 year old "watching" me did what any good neighbor kid would...ran.

So there I was all alone stuck thinking my arms would eventually tire and I would fall to my certian death (I was 6). Just started cry and yelling. Luckily there was someone walking nearby who heard my screams. He climbed up grabbed me and took me down.

Didn't think much of it until now, and now that I think about it why would they put a playground in that was way too difficult for young kids? It seemed so high when I was a kid like break neck high.

Would love to have seen if it was really that bad, or I just am remembering through kid eyes.

They are really not. You haven't seen those Christmas tree merry-go-rounds or saucer swings, have you?

When we were six, we lived in a fourplex in Bankview. They were constructing an apartment building being our fourplex. Me and my sister and a couple of boys from the apartment above ours would go into the construction site everyday and collect nails. We would put them in an old movie popcorn tub. Neither sets of parents cared that we were playing in an active construction site.

When I was eight, the kids behind our house in Penbrooke Meadows had a go-cart and we were watching them take it for a spin on the street. The go-cart stopped running at some point and they asked us to help them carry it back to their house for them. I remember my sister heaved up the portion of the cart where the hot exposed engine was. Still remember the sizzling sound upon her flesh.

When I was nine, me and my friends were hurling rocks at a bunch of kids with slingshots in a back alley. They were our enemies, probably for no other reason than living on a different street from ours. I hit a kid directly square on the nose. I remember there was blood everywhere. I also remember staying up all night scared about the trouble I was going to get in, especially about the savage whipping my dad was going to give me when he found out. I saw the kid at school a couple of days later with a cast on his nose. I never got into any trouble. Either the kid didn't know who hit him or he knew snitches got stitches.

A game that it seems like all kids played growing up - was throwing a ball against a wall and if you dropped it trying to catch it off the wall, you had to go to the wall with your bottom facing the other players and the one that threw the ball you dropped would whip it at your bum.

We called it bum's up, but from what I understand it had a different name at every school/community.

There still are some good ones around. Even some, where kids could actually still fall.

My brother and I modified the skis on ours so that it could go forward or backwards, then took the brakes off. Nearly killed myself on it.
