In case you're wondering, new houses are built to the same shoddy standards by the same shady characters. There seems to be very little pride of craftsmanship in general these days. It's garbage all around.

I hate to break it to you but build quality in SF homes vs condos isn't much different. Do you really think Truman gets contractors to do quality installations in all their homes but only does a crappy job in the condos they build?

They did provide me with the documents at possession but the insurance document didn't have any deductible information for the condo building insurance. You can't view them online so now I'm waiting in limbo to know if I'm covered unless I pay.

I am not talking about build quality. Rather, its the extra layer of crap you have to deal with in a condo versus a SFH.

I don't think that is really true at all.
It is just a different layer of crap.

No he is right.
A stand alone home owner doesn't have to deal with a property manager, a condo board, condo insurer.
If this happens in a stand alone home, Polak calls his insurance company and is away.

Screw that. I paid for my sink, and I damn well should be able to stand in it.

If you do, make sure you stand on one leg like a flamingo so it is only half the weight. Science!

No you're wrong.
You are completely ignoring the fact that Truman homes was involved, which wouldn't have changed, regardless of whether it was SFH or condo.
Plus he has to be talking about a lot more "crap" than just having to make one extra phone call. Otherwise if the only extra layer of crap is having to deal with a management company when making an insurance claim, that's not a very strong argument for why SFH are better than condos. There is a ton more to consider than just some random insurance claim due to builder negligence.

You'll never convince me that sharing a wall/ceiling/floor with other people while having to ever deal with a Condo board (or HOA...) and their stupid bylaws, special assessments and other assorted quirks would ever be worth the stress.

The only thing I miss about condo living is no snow shoveling and yard work. I remember trying to get condo papers from the management property and there was a substantial extra charge to get them within the next business day. So annoying. Especially when you are selling.

How Canadian of you.
Trying to label one style of living as objectively better than another one because of some random instance of a sink falling out due to negligence seems pretty silly. As for personal preference, sure, wouldn't we all rather live on a giant lot with no annoying neighbors?
That's like someone living in bearspaw saying they think you are crazy for living in a cramped city lot with another house 6 inches from your own. Everyone is going to have their own priorities.
We are extremely spoiled in Canada that our population density is so low and we can all afford to buy giant SFHs. Most large urban centres or countries with high population density are far more accustomed to dealing with horrible realities like sharing a wall with a neighbor or having to cooporate with fellow homeowners to make mutually beneficial housing decisions.

No you are wrong.
Actually, if you read the thread Truman Hones isn't involved. It is kind of the point of him starting the thread.
If this happens at a stand alone home it involves 2 parties:
Polak and his insurance company.
With a Condo many more come to the party:
Polak, his unit insurance company, maybe a board member, property management company, condo corp insurance company
Having had claims in both a condo and a stand alone home there is no comparison.

At this point you're just arguing for the sake of arguing.
This was about living in a condo vs living in a house. Not about the specifics of Polak's situation.

I despise condos and their boards of morons. But the insurance can be so much better. My condo was totally covered during the 2013 flood. My house wasn't at all.
