Headed to New York next week, staying in Brooklyn. Any must sees/must eats? Travelling solo.

Hitting up the Temple of the Dog concert and a few Rangers games so I'll have MSG covered. Pretty open for the rest of it.

(and yes, I already looked in the travel thread and its severely lacking in NY threads)

If you go up the Empire State Building (cool views at night, i.e.: after Rangers game), don't waste the money to go up to the higher floor. It's cramped and doesn't offer a better view than the 86th or whatever the lower observation deck is. Airport style security though.

^^ just goto the 86th at Empire State for sure, not worth the extra money to go higher.

Midtown
- Rockefeller at night (you can also goto Top of the Rock for a good view, but I never did)
- Grand Central Station is pretty amazing
- Bryant Park/New York City Library: A nice place to see in the middle of the concrete jungle

SO Many people there. Ugh.

New York is not my cup of tea, but it's awesome how there is a restaurant/pub on every single street corner in Manhattan and they all have good atmosphere, even mid-week. Times Square feels like Vegas, but with no casinos. So it gets old after about 4 minutes.

In Brooklyn:

I thought the pizza at Di Fara was delicious and Lucali a close second.

When you're in Manhattan:

Definitely head to the top of the Rockefeller building. On a clear day, the view is incredible and you can take photos with the Empire State in it.

The size of the Rockefeller ice rink is much smaller than I expected, but it's one of those iconic places you always see in movies/tv shows. If you have a chance, rent some skates and go for a spin. It's a neat experience.

If you have the time, do the tour of MSG. It's pretty inexpensive -- maybe $10/$15 from what I recall. The building has so much history and the tour guides have some great stories to tell. Highly recommended.

Most importantly, enjoy yourself

It's an unforgettable city.

Eat. Eat like a king. Chicken and Rice from a street vendor. $1 pizza slices. Chinatown. Central Park vendors (i.e. waffles!), Magnolia, Michelin star restaurants (make sure to book ahead for some of the highest rated ones, and be prepared to pony up a bit). List goes on forever.

Some random thoughts:

The best advice I can give is walk as much as possible. Manhattan itself is fairly compact, and you'll pretty much run into something interesting every couple of blocks. South of 23rd is especially walkable.

Go to Times Square once, and then never again. Unless you like hanging around with other tourists, and then complaining about how busy NY is.

Travelling solo is a good way to get into otherwise busy restaurants. The same is true for shows etc.

It's a bit of a hidden gem right under everyone's eyes, but the Oyster Bar in Grand Central Station is fantastic. Great seafood and a really cool setting.

They're never on any of the trendy food lists, but NYC has some great Indian restaurants that are an amazing value. There's a bunch around 6th street on the LES.

Smorgasburg (basically a foodie market every weekend) in Williamsburg is pretty huge now. Great views of the city too.

Harlem is also pretty great these days.

If you even remotely like camera's, B&H is your mecca.
