Yeah, Demko racking up the wins for BU is really killing the Flames.

Lehner wasn't an expensive acquisition was he? Bishop to TB, Halak to was it NYI? Don't recall the exact trades but none were a first and top G prospect of Gillies pedigree.

Gilles, sure. Flames would obviously have to add. A 1st rounder? No chance. We'd be picking 6th right now. A top 6 pick and our best goalie prospect for an AHLer with promise? No way.
Jennings trophy winning Cory friggin Schneider with a .930sv% over 80+ games of NHL hockey was traded for 9th overall in a deep draft.
(side note - Flames allegedly offered a better package, but didn't land him due to divisional rivalry. Imagine how much better this team would look with Schneider between the pipes)

The organization seems really high on Gillies so it would be odd to move him.
But in bringing in another goalie from the same draft year, it would be a bit odd not to move him.
Its interesting for sure.

Wasn't Macdonald rated higher than Demko in the draft year? I still think he has value and could see him included in a package. It gives the pens a couple more years to groom and develop and push the fleury replacement discussion back.

All the rankings I saw had demko rated higher. But I'm sure some had Mason higher. But if so, I didn't see it

This is a good review of the top goaltending prospects coming into this season. Murray at #5, Gillies at #10, Demko at #12 and McDonald at #15.

Lol people talking about our first for a goalie prospect are crazy. It's like saying either Bennett or monahan for him. That's way too much. I'd like for the flames to get him but not at that price.

Demko was tops, Macdonald was second.

Mackenzie predicted Demko would go late in the first round, 27th overall. So when he was still available at 34, many assumed the Flames would grab him.

Prospects, in particular goalies are very unpredictable right up until they have made it for good. At this time last year, it looked like the Flames made the right choice in taking Poirier over Shinkaruk, this year, most non flames fans would take Sinkaruk.
I wish I could sit here and say the Flames should have taken Demko, but if you watched any BC games in his draft year (which many Flames fans did because of Johnny), you probably weren't too impressed with his play particularly in the championship. Now maybe he learned a lot from the final four and developed after that. At the same time, McDonald had a great under 18 tournament and led Canada to a gold medal, so in the games that mattered in their draft year, McDonald performed better, and it's understandable why the Flames went with McDonald.

I don't think McDonald's development is going that poorly. Demko plays on a great college team so that helps his numbers quite a bit. I think the Flames had a very hard decision that draft deciding which goalie to take and the verdict is far from rendered.
Disagree that they were determined to pick a goalie there. I think goalies were the best player available at that range.
Let's revisit that one in about 5 years.

No AHL goalie has gone for a 1st, not without some track record at the nhl level. Why should that suddenly be the case?
Throw whatever sellable trade chips at the Pens for him. Any expiring vet should be on the table.
Bring him in and let him play out the year and get his feet wet now, while the games are basically meaningless. Perfect way to warm up a youngster. The rest of the season can basically be an extended training camp. We'll be all ready to go next year.

Demko's performance hasn't changed a lot. Still playing behind a great team that gives him low quality shots to face. We won't know who got the better end of that draft until these guys turn pro and face some equitable competition.

Honest question though. If the asking price was Gillies + expiring vet would you do it?
It's arguable Murray is more proven right now. But Gillies definitely has a similar if not better ceiling. Do you make the move to cut down on the development time for a potential starter?

Hadn't heard of him before now, but assuming he's worth getting excited about, I don't think it costs that much to get him if Pittsburgh is willing to give him up.
They only do it if they are after someone like Hudler. Despite some proposals on here, I think they add. It's either negotiating a need of theirs, or they'd just keep him.
We still need to be looking at a starter. No way BT goes after an unproven goalie and calls it a day. He bolsters or options, but doesn't solve it.
So I really don't see giving up much to get him.
