Difficult player to get a read on their value. Very solid goalie prospect and a huge need for the Flames.
Hudler obviously but they'll want something for now something for later. May have to give up a defense prospect with Pittsburg sending a pick/prospect to balance.

I'd be hesitant to trade for a goaltender if it costs more than one of our players heading to free agency, or a B-C grade prospect as a kicker. I definitely wouldn't be trading them Gillies or McDonald. Those two are important pieces going forward in developing our depth in net and not having to go through this gong show again. I would say Russell and Wotherspoon/Culkin would be the extent I would go.

I'd like to see Calgary stay the course until the off season. Then make an overture for one of St. Louis' guys or a similar scenario with a different team. Wait until teams have a clearer understanding of their own situations. Things are still so muddy at this time of year.

Wow. If they land Murray it would be huge. It would cost a lot. But Rutherford is easily tricked (love joy?).

It will cost to get Murray. Gillies would likely be in play, and maybe even the Flames 1st rounder.

Even still, he would have been on the bench as backup correct?
Thinking this is dual purpose...

He is though today, according to Pens twitter.
Some chatter among fans that Zatkoff is likely to go on waivers...

Yeah he was. And as pointed out by Redhot25, Fleury is starting today. Interesting for sure.

Cost a lot? What is a lot? I can't think of a deal where an unproven goaltender was moved for a big return. The Devils trade for Schneider or the San Jose acquisition of Jones seems to be the only ones of note, and those were for guys with some NHL body of work. The history of trading goaltenders doesn't lead me to believe the acquisition cost is going to be huge.

I would be lying if I said that I even knew who Matt Murray was before yesterday. But looking at his stats and accomplishments in the minors, I think he would be a good gamble depending on the cost anyway.

Who's a waiver wire guru? Is there any highly touted goalies set to hit the waiver wire next year like Markstrom has in years past?

Boy passing on Demko is costing this team dearly but when it comes to goaltenders the Flames have always done things the hard way. If they think this kid is the real deal then I would hope they are ready to put out a good offer. That said good AHL stats do not necessarily make for a star NHL goaltender. Really hard to assign a proper value IMO as this guy could be an NHL starter or an expensive backup.

The Macdonald pick was pretty weak. They were determined to pick a goalie there because they needed one rather than picking off a list. I understand goalies get their own ranking but it seemed forced. Picking him over demko....I didn't get that. Macdonald will take a while to develop but has shown no progression which is a bad sign.

You don't trade a top six pick for a goaltending prospect unless the guy is franchise caliber. When you're weak at the goaltending position in the organization you also don't trade your best goaltending prospect to grab another. If Treliving moves either piece I think it is a panic move. I doubt he does either, unless they are moved in a bigger package. I don't see anything in Pittsburgh's prospect pool to think a larger deal is likely.
