Well, there's an opening on SCOTUS.

Can they at least start coordinating schedules for the inevitable 3rd party arbitration? That will probably take another few business days, so that likely won't even start until next week.

I can't believe how much this is dragging out. Absolutely ridiculous.

According to source, the long awaited Dennis Wideman appeal decision could be announced today, or latest tomorrow.

This is just ridiculous that it's taking so long.

I"m guessing tomorrow, that way he'll have already served a bunch of games and they'll say that it's enough and he'll play the next one.

Shouldn't the NHL at least make this appear like it's going to be a fair appeal?

Too funny. Is Dreger ever definitive on anything?? Seriously he hedges his bets on everything he says.

It is now 3 weeks since the incident and out of a 3-step process, step 2 has yet to be completed. What's the point of getting an independent arbitrator for anything over 5 games, when the steps before that take 8+ games?

I would think Wideman has grounds for claiming the NHL is deliberately delaying the process and therefore is not getting his CBA right to an independent arbitrator.

Doubt it. Being that there were lawyers involved I am sure everything is being done in accordance with the CBA.

I assume you meant under not over 5 games.
There would be little or no point for the fans or team, but still quite a few lost dollars on the line for the player in addition to reputation and record.

I doubt an arbitrator will do anything to rock the boat too hard. The best they will do for Wideman is call it time served and reinstate him for the following game.

Arbitrator doesn't care about the boat...he doesn't work for the league or the players. Arbitrator will look at past incidents and how many games they got, Dennis has lots to show them.

Arbitrator isn't possible under 5 games. He meant anything that appears that it could/should be in the 0-15 game range but is ruled 5 or more...

Perhaps a bit of a conspiracy theory, but I wonder whether the league knows it's going to lose the arbitration in the end, and is delaying the decision as much as possible so that, in the end, they can tell the referee's Union "he didn't play for 8 games."

So a small sample size of games here, but I was curious to see what the penalties called for and against were for the Flames for the immediate 6 games after the Wideman incident, and the 6 games prior (for easy comparison).
So I took the liberty of charting it out based on penalties called for and against (includes offsetting).

The only implication from that chart is that Eric Furlatt is a small man with a large ego. Other than the two games he officiated, the Flames were pretty much normal. We got more power plays than normal in those two games as well.

I normally am pretty pro-Bettman, but this is far too long. So was the initial hearing.
