No surprises here.

Excellent job Torts. Potentially antagonize one of your best players and at the same time devalue him on the trade market. Knowing how Torts managed the Sedins, I think Johansen still will have plenty left in the tank with a competent coach.
The situation reminds me a bit of the O'Reilly saga in Colorado. Good player, but perhaps an inflated opinion as to his own value. Buffalo appeared to overpay for O'Reilly at first glance, but I don't think they regret that trade now.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

I believe Hiller and Ramo are both on expiring contracts, so they're looking at next year as well.

Reading that article, Francis doesn't see Bernier's upside and says Babcock and the whole Leafs organization can't see his upside. Come on. What a joke. This is exactly the kind of situation where you land a goalie. Every goalie has their struggles. Sharks gave up on Kipper. The Flyers gave up on Bobrovsky. The BJs gave up on Mason. The Lightning gave up on Mike Smith. The list goes on and on. Much stranger things have happened than Bernier finding his form. He looked very solid just a year ago and no one wanted Reimer.
It might turn out this year or next, or it might not. But I see no harm in trying if the price is right. I don't see that the Flames have much to lose.

I don't think that the solution to the 3 headed monster is to bring in a fourth goalie. Even if you just bury Hiller in the minors thats still too many goalies.
The Flames are actually in a good position right now as Hiller, Ramo and Ortio are all coming off the books this year. Just wait it out and let this mess solve itself. Don't bring in another teams garbage especially if they are signed past this year.

Because of the Burke trade freeze, I think we'll see something like Bernier + Grabner for Hiller + Raymond in January.
That being said, if there's a way to get Johansen without giving Monahan, Gaudreau, Bennett, Brodie or Hamilton then we should.

I'm tired of hearing about the 3 headed monster. The Flames have 2 goalies on their roster. Ortio was put on waivers and is now in the minors. If the Flames pick up a goalie and trade one away it would still just be a 2 headed monster... or a regular situation. There really is no goalie controversy in Calgary right now other than not having a real starter.

In regards to the Leaf deal the only way the Flames should do it now is if they can move one or more of those bad contracts next year. If we could even out the money even better.
Hiller, Raymond, Bollig
For
Bernier, Grabner, Mathias

Does the famous Burke trade freeze still apply with Brad Treliving in charge?
Although this close to Christmas I think there may even be a league freeze

Yes Treliving put a trade freeze last year.

The Johansen situation is much closer to what Boston went thru with Seguin, than what Buffalo/Vancouver/Montreal have experienced with Kassian.

Davidson's the president, Kekaleinen is the gm, and I have no idea how he is in negotiations. Aside from the fact they both were pretty negative in public about Johansens's agent and Johansen's position (called it "extortion".)

Chiming in late here. I watched Johansen play the other night and he was godawful. As in, zero compete, with lazy plays including one that cost his team the game in OT. If I was a BJ fan I'd have been furious.
He certainly deserved to be scratched.
Do not want.
edit: At least he knows he caused this himself:

He didn't just forget how to play, it is obvious he wants the hell out of there and has no drive to compete for that team right now.

Same here. I still think he's not only an NHLer but a starter. I want to see him get a regular backup spot.
