I still think Wideman is a top 4 D on the Flames. If anything it is Russell that gets knocked down to the bottom pairing.
I trade Wideman if we can get a legit top 6 winger that is in the 22-28 age group and then sign a decent depth Dman this summer. Otherwise I think we keep him around

Come now, they're not gonna trade those guys.
Let's just settle for Teemu Pulkkinen.

Wideman is still the 2nd best Right shooting D on the team, the best Right shot, a vet, and a minute eater. He doesn't skate great, but pair him with BRODIE and they are pretty dynamic.
Russell, being the 3rd best leftie D, is also a natural pair for Engelland, can still step up and play 25min every time, and will take a lot less beating on the 3rd pair if he doesn't have to block so many shots. I bet his possession is much better too.
Might also be cheaper to re-sign in a year.

2015/2016 Trade Speculation and Rumors

Personally I don't see any reason to reduce his ice time significantly. 56 point seasons are no joke, you want to maximize his offense with O-zone starts, PP time and put him out there with the 1st line etc.
|
This. I'm sure Hartley will capitalize on Wideman's offensive prowess while still managing D minutes properly. Just spitballing here:
Gio-Brodie = 22 minutes TOI
Hamilton-Russell = 21 minutes
Wideman-Engelland = 17 minutes TOI
Give or take. Helps keep all the D fresh and reduce chance of injury. And then Calgary averaged 6 minutes and 12 seconds of PP time per game.
Gio-Brodie = 3:27
Wideman-Hamilton = 2:45
Give or take.
Throw in favorable O-zone starts and line matching, etc. and Wideman will get his points.

Bob Murray mentioned late Tuesday evening that he made 1 and 2 year offers for Beauchemin but Beauchemin wants a 3 year deal around 5 M per. Murray said he will not be re-signed and will sign with another team.

Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Phil Kessel is owed a $4 million signing bonus tomorrow. The Leafs may have liked to move him before, but they realize the best trade offer may come after the payment is made. Source said that the Flames kicked tires on Kessel at the draft. The Leafs weren’t willing to retain any salary, but were willing to take back some contracts to lighten the salary/cap hit. LeBrun can’t see the Leafs making a deal without retaining some salary.

I wonder which Flames would've been going back the other way?

I imagine Wideman would have been part of that deal.

Just head scratching that they would extend Bitchska for roughly the same dollars. Beauchemin was a legitimate force against the Flames whereas Bitchska was a liability.
beauchemin is also legitimately tough and only fights less cause he doesn't spot pick.

Would honestly love to see John Moore being picked up as part of the extra NHL calibre depth for this team. Surprising that he wasn't qualified. Wonder if anybody knows the reasons why.

If the Leafs retain 2M of his salary, and take back one or more of Smid/Raymond/Hiller, then Kessel would be very valuable to this team.

Perhaps that's why Ward is jumping around the TSN studio?
