This is about another goalie playing in the NHL for the next 3-4 seasons. It's not a condemnation of the goalies coming up in the system. It probably also speaks as to the value Treliving sees on the FA goalie market - acquiring and re-signing one through a trade may be more attractive than paying the FA prices in terms of dollar and term.

Maybe we have a deal in place for Hiller that hinges on us getting a replacement?

He does however have the Best mask of ALL time! I would sign him just for that, of course the New York spin would not work anywhere else!

We will see what the price is, but goaltending isn't exactly a strong point for the organization so I kinda get it.

This gets thrown around a lot but the fact of the matter is that Hiller stats-wise over 52 games was in a dead heat with guys like Luongo, Andersen and better than guys like Lack, Ward, Miller, Anderson, Bobrovsky, etc. Fans have to come to grips that guys like Price, Lundquist, Rinne are the exception not the norm for goaltending level of play. Flames goaltending at worst was pretty average but wasn't nearly as bad as some make it out to be at times.

Plus, I would imagine that Treliving already utilized the June 25th rule to make contact with Dubnyk's agent. It's quite possible there was no deal to be had there.

I think it's a condemnation of Ortio. Not so much of Gillies or McDonald.

My thought is that it means that Treliving isn't certain with what he has in Ortio. A Talbot/Ortio tandem with Hartley coaching would likely work just as Hiller/Ramo did. Ortio would be given opportunities to take some starts if Talbot falters or Ortio earns them.

I don't think Niemi is great at all. And on the Dubnyk side - he has to want to come here and apparently wants massive term and $$$.
So it isn't that easy.

I think it is a condemnation of Hiller IMO.
Trade for Talbot and you have him and Ortio as a relatively young 1A and 1B situation.
Most NCAA goalies take 2-3 years in the AHL to develop so Gillies is a couple years away, and McDonald is probably 4-5 years away.
Only thing I don't like is the cost.

Oh I agree. And average is probably a fair term, though I think anything above that over-states the quality of the goaltending. The way I break it down is you had two guys:
Hiller - more consistent, but not capable of stealing many games
Ramo - more inconsistent, but more capable of stealing the odd game
It stuns me this team actually got in with this as the tandem. I would put it in the bottom third of the league. But I'm also just not a fan of Hiller so maybe I have some built-in bias.

I would be okay if the Flames worked a deal with LA for Jones, but it would have to be something like Jones and Martinez/Muzzin for the 15th and a prospect like Wotherspoon. Flames could then trade some of our picks to move up if they so desire.

There were games where he was the only thing that separated the Oilers from middling AJHL teams.
He took over the starting job in Arizona and did decent considering how bad that team was.
He completely turned around what was looking to be a long, miserable season for the Wild.
I would argue the guy has been given nothing but terrible opportunities and made the most of them.

With all these "Flames ahead of the Oilers" for Talbot quotes I kind of wonder if it isn't just a little bit of a ploy to try to get the Oilers to up their offer.

Bias or not I think you correctly describe them (and I probably lean the opposite way).
I wonder if it would serve the Flames better or worse to have two goalies who play the same style, or at least more similar than Ramo and Hiller.

Don't really want to give up 2 second round picks for a 1A.
Either get a proper Number 1, or just keep Hiller.

Probably a bit of this as he easily outdueled Lack in the first round and supposedly Lack is a hot commodity in the trade market. I don't think he's that bad and he's just has lapses but that's why you need a solid backup to spell him for a period of time. I feel Ortio would get a fair amount of work and a year from now Treliving would have a much better idea on what direction he needs to go with the position with Hiller a UFA.
