What a disaster that would be to acquire a pending UFA back-up goalie for anything more than 3rd round pick.
We are still a rebuilding team and I would rather risk taking a step back next season then see the team make a "win now" trade like this.

My understanding with league rules, no contract discussions can occur until January. Due to 1 year remaining on his contract and the player becoming a UFA.
Pretty sure, I heard this on Fan960 yesterday.

Maybe he doesn't want to share the net?

Treliving do you know how much time and money I've spent researching and reading draft previews? You had better not have wasted my time by trading the second round picks away!
Green text needed?

Regarding the pending UFA part of acquiring Talbot, the Flames did ensure they talked to Talbot prior to making any trade. While contract specifics can't be negotiated during that time, Talbot's fit with the club and its plans certainly would be discussed. Should a trade be finalized with the Flames acquiring Talbot, it's safe to assume that this discussion gave the Flames confidence that signing him would be very likely.

Definitely one of the possibilities, or just wants too much money, etc...
I thought Calgary playing Ramo in the elimination game, meant he was their man going forward. Maybe all it meant is that Hiller isn't.

IMO this is not a 'win now' trade. Treliving has been working the phones hard these last few weeks, and he's not one to like carrying three goalies at all. He has a plan. If we acquire Talbot, I am pretty comfortable in saying that one of Hiller/Ortio is on their way out. No way does Treliving pull off a deal for Talbot if he doesn't already have a trade framed up for one of the other two guys. He said he now has a much better understanding of the team and what the asset values are, I trust he will continue to try to maximize those assets. He said we aren't a piece or two away from contending from a championship, and Talbot surely doesn't make the Flames legit contenders, but if this is step one of many that helps the Flames get to that point... sign me up.

We are debating how this makes sense for the Flames, but Lundqvist isn't getting any younger -- why are the Rangers trading Talbot instead of moving other contracts to lock him up long-term? How many years left do the Rangers think Lundqvist has?

Because they know they are selling high on Talbot. That's my guess.

I would assume its for more playing time, he probably doesn't want to play second fiddle to Orito. Also he should be in for a decent pay raise.

While EDM and CGY are in on Talbot with NYR, don't rule out the two Alberta teams also having interest in LAK Martin Jones, who may move.

Whether Henrik is getting younger or not has nothing to do with it. He's still got 6 more years left on his deal. He's their goalie for a long time still, and Talbot would be 33 by the time Lundqvists contract is up.

What happened to Luongo? That makes no sense.

That would have required (a) signing Ramo at whatever could be negotiated and (b) trading Hiller for whatever return that could be obtained. I don't think they viewed Ramo as so far superior to Hiller to make that happen. Additionally, I'm not convinced Hartley prefers Ramo to Hiller. Hiller had more starts, less pulls and generally a slightly longer leash.

It is clear the Flames don't like what they have in net for next season. And I can't say I blame them. They Flames got in the playoffs in spite of mediocre to below average goaltending. If they don't think Ortio is ready - they probably see this as a chance to shore up the position until Gillies is ready in 3 years.
We will see what the price is, but goaltending isn't exactly a strong point for the organization so I kinda get it.

The only thing I can think of is Treliving is trying to drive up the prices of goaltending, acquire a young one, then ships off Hiller.

It would be brutal to ship one second, let alone two for either Talbot or Jones. There's good ones in the system, Ortio appears to be about ready, and it's becoming increasingly clear that goaltender performance is largely a function of the defense in front of them.
