I'm glad he's standing up to the public shaming and bullying so far, but who knows. I'd say the real time for him to be scared is when internet warriors start doxing him and sending death threats to him and his family.
How is he legally protected?

Really? So we're all good to post whatever we want about you, put it on national tv and your're good with that? All of our rights have limits and to paraphrase someone way smarter than me, your right to do something stops when it infringes on my rights.

As for why broadcast nets post tweets in the first place, do you guys really not understand the power of heavy engagement of your hashtag on a social network with nearly 300 million active users? Adding immediate value to the broadcast is not the intention.

Appears that the tweeter has now deleted his feed. Won't help his case. Now he can't post a public apology.

He would have been much better served to apologize profusely and then move on.

Legitimized lol. Ya because everyone who read it was like it's on TSNs twitter feed it has to be true. It gave it exposure but I don't think anyone believed it was more than a joke.

If you can get sued for trolling on social media, I'm in a lot of trouble...

It was more a general notion (and note that whole italicized seemingly prefacing the term), but I think you would be surprised.

It received national (perhaps international) exposure, which frankly is legitimate enough.

Has twitter ever done anything good?

For anyone?

Ever?

Sure helped get our mayor (Calgary) elected. Though that could be argued whether it has done anyone good, lol.

The story here is TSN/Bell Media showing that garbage.

You don't have to go too far to see much more disgusting and vile stuff on twitter towards public/sports figures, or, their kids. While this guy tweeting the Phaneuf stuff is a loser, there are much more disturbed people out there.

From the last couple days, Exhibit a) http://deadspin.com/curt-schilling-g...g-h-1688969687

Schilling does what needs to be done in outing those guys, which will have repercussions for those guys now as long as there is an internet search engine.

Kinda late on this response, but nailed it.

I so badly want this to be a funny 600goals/1300points, something special... joke, because again some stupid Edmonton fan thought this guy would finally solve their problems.

But I think about the undertones in this joke and know its a joke that just doesn't need to be made, and even as an Oiler Leon does not deserve to be associated with that.

I would be surprised because between my friends in real life, the posters on here and various other places online I didn't find anything that would lead me to believe people viewed it as anything more than a joke (or a bad joke) but maybe you seen otherwise. It was on a twitter feed which people realize is random viewers txting in. I just don't think people confuse some random kids tweet as a legitimate source.

When someone hashtags a tweet, they do so to get people to read their tweet. It allows people who are following a hashtag trend to see their tweet. The tweeter hashtagged his tweet specifically to get it beyond his internal group of friends.

The tweets to Schilling' daughter were definitely taking it too far. I can respect him sticking up for his daughter in that situation without a doubt. As bad as it is to say I don't feel the same about Phaneuf. It was one bad tweet that should have never got to air. Fire the guy. Apologize to Phaneuf, Cuthbert, and Lupul and make amends how you feel appropriate. Make sure it doesn't happen again. Move on.

Obviously he wanted it to get to air. Probably didn't think in a million years it would. But that is irrelevant to what we were discussing.

How does him wanting his tweet to be read have anything to do with people viewing the tweet as legitimate? You obviously misunderstood something along the way because your talking about something completely different than what Yamer and I were talking about.
