They still have to match the offer sheet. WHich they should, but ya never know. As the team with cap space and no truly horrid contracts, we're in a position of power come signing time.
I'd rather L.A. be stuck with one of the worst contracts in NHL.

He would definitely be a prime target for an offer sheet. Kings would be very hard pressed to match with their cap situation

Bit then really anyone could write the offer sheet, so Calgary would do better to trade for him. I'd give up Jooris in a heartbeat for Tiffoli, but I'm very leery of that term on Richards contract

Closer it get to the deadline and if the Kings are still on the outside looking in, Lombardi may go squirrely and may be forced to make a trade he doesn't want.

Agreed. They are vulnerable to offer sheets on Jones and Pearson as well. And they're going to lose Stoll and Williams most likely. Not buying out Richards with a compliance buy out was a huge blunder. LA got two cups, but their chance at a dynasty is over in my opinion. Too many bad contracts that are going to drag them down.
They could lose one or more of their guys to offer sheets and STILL have Richards on the books if they don't bite the bullet and pay whatever it takes to get rid of that contract. Good news for the Flames.

There is the potential they could acquire a 1st round pick for Justin Williamsnat the deadline and use that pick to get out of the Richards deal?

I feel extra sorry for the team that gives up a 1st rounder for Justin Williams.

I agree with everyone that says let Richards rot on the Kings, why would we want to do them any favors?
Flames are going to have to hand out some hefty raises over the next couple of years, last thing we need is Richards contract handcuffing us.

In conclusion, #### the Kings.

Too right. In each of their cup wins, Lombardi made a deal to bring in a key guy to the run. Carter the first time and Gaborik the second. Give him some cap room and he will find a guy to knock Calgary out of the POs. And/or suddenly Raymond finds his touch or Stajan plays a key 4th line role for them.

I know what contender would want the Conn Smythe winner from last years playoffs on their team right?

If 50% retained salary is done in the trade, 2.8m a year isn't going to handcuff any team. Cap may drop next year but it will go up and up and up for the duration of Richards' contract.

Lombardi is taking his time and looking at all his options.
One would have to think a team would take a chance on Richards at $2.8M today without getting a solid asset back but I am not sure LA wants $2.8M in dead cap space for 5 years.
Lombardi has to decide if he is going to wait until the summer to try again, eat salary today, or pay a significant asset to dump the contract.
I suspect Richards will be out of the Kings organization by the deadline

That's the King's archived Capgeek page. They can't afford to retain 50% and still ice anything close to the same team they've had the last couple years.

I could see Williams returning a 1st if the kings throw in the towel. Maybe more.

It's too bad the nhl wouldn't let teams structure buyouts over a shorter time span than what it is. If Calgary could take the amount owing in a buyout and spread it out over 2-3 years instead of 10 maybe there would be room to do something. It would be like 6m per season for 3 years (which could easily be afforded) instead of 10 years where the amounts vary year to year.

Everyone looking at LA having to take on that salary for the duration should remember that Calgary isn't the only option for dumping Richards. It's already been surmised earlier in this thread that at the very least Buffalo is in the same rebuilding situation we are, and be looking to reap the benefit of a desperate LA club.

Just like if LA keeps Richards, there will likely be a few teams ready to offer sheet some of their RFAs.
The Flames certainly won't be the only team circling.

Buffalo is already dealing with Buyouts, though, which likely makes them more reluctant to not take on any more.
Yes, their buyouts don't count against the cap, but they still cost financially.
7 more years at around 3 million for Ehrhoff alone.
I'm not that afraid of the richards contract, if it gets you a top contributing player on an ELC. In my mind, you trade for it to buy it out and you look for contract savings like with Brodie to make up that 2 million dollar difference. When Monohan is 26, the Cap hit is gone.

Which is why I doubt very much they leave him exposed.
Also, offer sheets suck. Some people see them as a free asset but they are a trade: player for picks. The only way LA wouldn't match on Toffoli would be if the offer was so high that it made the compensation a worthwhile consolation prize.
