Stajan and Shore for Richards and Toffoli? I would love that deal didn't Toffoli play with Monahan in junior?
I threw Shore in there from our end since the Kings have his bro in their system

I've hated Dustin Brown as a player for quite some time now, so yeah if he (and those other contracts) brings down the Kings and makes room for teams like us then you better believe I'm chuckling.
Pro sports. What have you done for me lately. It's not a new thing.

I doubt it is Toffoli, but don't think a first or top prospect is out of the question.
There is $22 million dollars left on that contract, worth much more then a 2nd or 3rd rounder.

So you're looking at something like 15th - 17th overall best case scenario. So a player who may pan out in 4 years.

as of today (if the season ended) LA is looking at #14.... Getting rid of Richards will leap frog them in the standings? Nick Shore will be better?
They are 10 pts up from picking 5th overall.
They have lost Pearson for the rest of the year. Tofolli has Mono and is expected to be out another couple weeks.
Missing Voynov has Doughty averaging 29:23/game rather than 24-26 that he was used to. He is only a +1.
The long term plan is to dump Richards for cap relief. The short term plan is that this just does not seem to be their year. They might be looking at what they can get for upcoming UFA's Regehr and Stoll.

Just because we think/thought someone might claim him, doesn't mean we'd do it ourselves...

agreed, but it does start to frame the value of cap space.
Carolina will be in a similar boat with Semin's contract, and they don't generate the revenue the Kings do. They should be looking to offer more
I think the value of our cap space will grow exponentially peaking at the draft and July 1st timeframe

Depends on a lot of things.
Salary retention by LA
Salary cap by 2020
Heck, Richards could be retired by then.

Probably smarter to buy him out and spread the pain over more years than to retain almost 3m for 5 years. Those 2 years with 4.2m probably squash that though.

GMs have a history of making bad deals, so betting on one to make another bad deal isn't a huge stretch.

Sure if we're talking exact numbers, but cap space is infinitely more valuable in 4-5 years right when it's worst from a buyout perspective. No matter what this is sacrificing a valuable commodity in the future so the return would have to be quite large for future as well. I'm not sure Richards alone provides even close to that

I highly doubt Richards would retire prior to being 35. This is a bad contract but at least it is not one that runs through until the player is in his 40's

I miss cap geek. Anyone know what his buyout would look like if he played a couple more seasons and then got bought out. That would take some length of the buyout penalty and potentially lower the cap hit as you are buying out the 4.5 and 3.0 x2 years. He may even have a bit more value making sub 4.5 or 3.0 to a team trying to get to the floor at that point.

There, it's 100% confirmed, 29 GMs don't want Richards for free. Can fans please stop saying he'd be a worthwhile acquisition?

Why get something for free when you can get compensated to take him?

Paul Byron cleared waivers just a couple of months ago, didn't he?
Certainly hasn't stopped people from claiming that he's worthwhile to have on the team.
There can be a lot of reasons why a player isn't claimed on waivers, especially the expectation that the Kings will add to the deal for the team that takes him.
If the Kings were *actually* going to bury him in the minors, I doubt he'd have cleared.
