Richards was huge in the POs? Not last year. I watched all those Kings playoffs and I didn't notice Richards much. It was all Doughty, Kopitar, Carter, Brown, Quick, Williams, Gaborik, Toffoli, Pearson.

I don't think Richards will be claimed. Im a little worried that LA then visits back with Calgary on trade talks. I really don't think that the flames would get a 1st round pick or blue chip prospect for taking on Richards. It was mentioned by the talking heads that Calgary would send a bad contract. Term wise the flames really don't have bad contracts. At least nothing going more than a couple more years.
Scott Cullen of TSN was saying something around Raymond and Stajan for Richards with a bit of money retained on Richards contract. Can't remember how many years left on Stajan but Richards has 5 more after this season.

My assessment is that the Flames recognize the value in their cap space and realize it is probably their most valuable trade asset.
I think we'll ask exorbidant prices and will get it as the pressure continues to mount.

Agreed.
Those rumored deals in the summer for Ward and Ribeiro included top 15 picks. I can't see Treliving and Burke substantially lowering their ask given what Richards contract looks like.
Calgary would enter any negotiation from a position of strength... entirely no reason for them to cave into LA's demands.

L.A. should really be looking at a mini-reset, sort of what Chicago had to do.
Kings are getting older and key players are wearing down due to the style of play.
They should really look at just moving Williams, Stoll, and Regehr at the deadline in order to see what type of youth they could get back.
Lots of long term contracts for veterans already and extending those three will just add to the issue.
8 years left for Quick
7 years for Dustin Brown
7 Years for Carter
6 years for Gaborik
5 years for Richards
The numbers looked good when they signed, but Brown, Richards and Gaborik already appear to be on the downturn.
The backend is pretty good long term with Doughty, Muzzin, and Martinez signed long term at good rates (Voynov too but his status is up in the air of course). Plus they still have a good forward group with Kopitar, Toffoli, Pearson, and Carter alone. If they play the next 6 months smartly and don't create long term pain for another chance this year they will be fine.

^I agree on the Richards and Brown front. I think Gaborik is still worth his contract.
Kings need to get younger and especially with players like Toffoli needing new contracts sooner rather than later, they need to gain flexibility.
Losing the cap hit of Richards for the long term can make a huge difference to help that flexibility. Hopefully they see value and agree to add a valuable asset if trading with the flames

Raymond and Stajan for Richards would be an alright deal if the Kings could eat $1M per on Richards contract and the Flames could eat $1M on Raymonds. LA would be sending out $4.75M in cap and taking back $5.2 I believe on the deal but get 2 players that can play in their lineup. It opens a permanent spot for a youngster so I like it from Calgarys end.

Treliving's asking price for cap relief has been at minimum an early first rounder, if the rumors of the Ribero and Ward asking price are true, so hopefully that is what Treliving is asking for from the Kings.

Those are some pretty serious boat anchors. 7 years of Dustin Brown? lol
With the way their core is aging and the way they are all signed and untradeable, I won't be surprised to see them draft top 5 in the next 5 years if they can't get out from under them somehow.

I love Mike Richards, it's too bad he's got such a ridiculous contract, I'd take him as a Flame any day. The guy wins wherever he goes.

It would be huge to get a 1st rounder from LA.
Otherwise there's no point making the trade. I'd rather have Mason Raymond's contract on the books than Richards, unless we were to get big assets back.

Honestly I don't think their 1st is even worth taking that anchor contract.
So you're looking at something like 15th - 17th overall best case scenario. So a player who may pan out in 4 years.

From Friedman's "30 Thoughts" it looks like Toronto and Calgary were asking for Pearson/Toffoli as compensation for taking Carter.

Just goes to show that while the average fan loves to criticize management of their favorite teams the fact is that it's not nearly as easy a job as it looks and the majority of fans would be Kevin Lowe levels of horrible at it. In fact even worse seeing the Oilers are even smart enough not to put in a claim for him.

I would REALLY like to see what that deal looked like from our perspective.
Stajan for Richards/Toffolli?

If the "boat anchor" of a Flames captain lead them to 2 cups in recent (last 3 years) history, I would have no problem with him being around another 7 years. Let him retire with the team threads for all I care.
"lol" wouldn't be part of my vocabulary in that instance.

If we could somehow get Toffoli out of this, I would be shocked.
Being in a playoff race with them, has to hurt our chances of a lopsided trade though.
