I bet if CP ran that team with a series of online polls to make key decisions we would do a better job than those dimwits.

I mean really, could we do any worse?

I am actually happy this is happening. They were headed for dead last and a top 2 pick, and undeserved high end talent. I hope they go on a tear now and end up with the 10th pick.

This club must really agrivate everyone else in the league at how they swoop in and steal away top picks year after year. I can't imagine them stealing McDavid when they have the previous picks they do, will help their standing in the league when trying to do deals. They are like the guy at the bar who cuts in front of you after you are waiting in line to order. Only it happens about 4 times in one night. At some point you want to slug them out. Just total D-bags of the NHL.

ANOTHER rookie head coach in Nelson for next year?

Are you kidding me, Oilers? Are you kidding?

And Nelson isn't even guaranteed to be the head coach next season. MacT will hold his hand for a bit, let him coach out the season, and then still might hire a new coach to start next season.

You can't make this stuff up.

Lets hope MacT by a miracle can get something out of them and they finish well out of McDavid territory.

So, haven't been able to listen.... but from what I gather so far, MacTavish has said:

Dallas Eakins is a great coach.
The team can't gain traction or get out of losing habits.

Solution:

Don't trade players
Fire Great Coach
Promote another AHL coach, but also be the coach....

Have I got that right, because that doesn't sound like something a GM would say... or do. So it's gotta be right...

Did he seriously bring up the 80's reference? We all joke how they are building a team of the past, but I didn't think they would actually say it

They win right away, MacT takes credit (and maybe stays as head coach). They lose,"it's a process" (and at the end of the year Nelson gets the blame).

Well, it does make sense that they are bringing in Nelson. I am sure they are waiting to see whom else becomes available between now and the off-season. I don't think there are any really fantastic candidates out there at the moment, unless Bylsma is a guy you think can turn that club around.

Really surprised they made this move now. Thought for sure they were just very content with riding this season out for McDavid.

All while shooting his AHL team in the foot by taking away their coach and person who was actually getting some production from anything with the Oilers name on it.

It wasn't enough to mess up the NHL team, he's dipped into the AHL now.

Even better part... MacT will hold the hand of the new interim guy. Great. No need for any new thoughts or viewpoints to come behind the bench. Groom him in your mold, then be satisfied and make him the head coach.

Also, how much of a ridiculous message is it to hire an interim coach that you're going to train on-the-job? Ridiculous. It's simply an overt demonstration that you're once again hiring someone who is not qualified.
When no proven coaches want to step in, the mentor (MacT) carries the same garbage values that perpetuate this low level of play, the GM gets backed by the POHO, and the players still realize they won't be held accountable, what do you think is going to happen. There will be no culture shift, there will be no improvement, but there will ALWAYS be no good.

There's not a single NHL coach who will go to that circus.

I believe he worded it that the accountability and competitiveness not of recent teams, but of previous teams that were champions.

It was far easier to type "80's" then that drivel.

I wonder if someone from the league or even some other owner got a hold of Katz at some point in the last week and said 'You have to make it look less like you are tanking...seriously, you have to do SOMETHING because its really embarassing at this point. For all of us. And if you dont there is no way in hell we will let you win the lottery.'

You don't think anyone will want to coach Connor McDavid or Jack Eichel?

Possibly, but since Nelson isn't guaranteed the position next season, these same coaches can wait until after the gong show this season is over and make a decision.

I'm pretty sure no veteran coach will go there primarily because of their incompetent management.
