I haven't read anything that says semi-automatic weapon. Everything I've read says 'rifle'.

Seriously, who gives a rats ass about your gun laws compared to ours? This is a tragedy and not a political agenda. We need to think about the fallen and make sure that this doesn't happen again.

Soldiers that are at home shouldn't be getting killed by extremist, we shouldn't be having this conversation about gun rights/laws and keep the families that have been affected on our collective minds.

There are plenty of dumb Americans, as well as dumb Canadians, let them be stupid on their own and don't give them the time of day.

God Bless Canada!

You can't stop a shooting out of the blue. Just can't be done. So the best case, after Cpl. Cirillo was shot, was that someone shoots the shooter. Which is what ultimately happened. Worst case, I'm sure we all know what a bunch of panicky people shooting wildly can do. Not to mention the associated problems of a massive rise in gun violence day to day.
While true, people also must realize that we are talking about the capital. The amount of 'armed guards' is significantly higher there than it will be in the suburbs. Having properly trained security forces almost right there will have made a huge difference in how quickly this was over.

It would have been a completely different situation if this happened anywhere besides Parliment Hill. We have seen that this year already in Moncton.

Your point is well taken, but keep in mind - ignoring these "dumb" people does not make safety better. In fact it probably makes it worse.

Just like cancer, you need to detect these people early - before its too late.

No he didn't. It was a double barrel shot gun.

CBC is reporting that Stephen Harper will speak this evening.

That being said, today has been a very sad and tragic day. I feel nothing but sympathy for the fallen soldier's family, and nothing but gratitude for the first responders in this city that did a wonderful job today. Despite what some media outsets say, my feeling is that Ottawans do not feel terrorized, but rather they feel sadness, anger, sorrow and gratitude. The impact of what happened today has been felt very far, and I feel it could be a defining moment for our country.

Yup. And one of the things that is being understated today is how calm and rational the RCMP and Ottawa Police were. They were calm all the way through, and help keep the larger situation calm.

It's official Canadian policy that the Queen not give British Honours to Canadians and the Canada Honours system does not include knighthood so knighthood is generally out of the question for Canadians.

One of the best ways to make sure that tragedies involving firearms don't happen again is to restrict access to firearms by strengthening gun laws. While you're right that gun laws in America have absolutely no bearing on what happened in Ottawa, it's totally reasonable to ask the question "in light of these events, should weapons restrictions in Canada be increased."

I mean, here was an individual who was under police scrutiny, had a criminal record, and had their passport revoked, yet they were able to acquire a weapon from somewhere. It's totally, totally appropriate to ask if this was a failure of our weapons laws and if they should be strengthened.

Sure once the investigators determine where the gun came from and how it was acquired. then we can have that discussion on gun control.

Not only today, but in Moncton as well. You absolutely see how calm and professional they are in handling the situation. Even the quick response teams and the men and women directly involved in the shootings. Just amazing professionalism all around.

I know cops get a bad name all too often, but whoever is training these guys is doing a bang up job, and the guys/gals executing the orders on the other end make me proud.

Damn proud to be a Canadian.
