You need a passport to enter another country. They won't let you in without one.

Supposed it depended on the country you were trying to enter....
Anyway, back on topic...

yeah, I thought I'd heard that knighthood was a bit controversial in Canada anyway.
I wasn't sure what part the Queen, if any, played in those kinds of traditions or honors in Canada.

Aren't you also required to show your passport at the check-in counter too? I don't think you can leave the country without one, regardless of where you are going.

IIRC, the only country Canadians could enter without a passport was the US. Those rules changed a few years ago, and now you can't go anywhere without a passport. At least when travelling by air, they won't let you board the plane on an international flight without showing your passport. You also need to enter your passport details when checking in.

Thanks. Didn't mean to be melodramatic I'm not sure what your military honors are vs any other honorary awards/titles.
And, some people might not like my feelings on this. If this had happened down here , I'm sure there would have been other casualties.

Federal sources have identified the suspected shooter as Michael Zehef-Bibeau, a man in his early 30s who was known to Canadian authorities.
Sources told The Globe and Mail that he was recently designated a “high-risk traveller” by the Canadian government and that his passport had been seized – the same circumstances surrounding the case of Martin Rouleau-Couture, the Quebecker who was shot Monday after running down two Canadian Forces soldiers with his car.

Sounds like another psycho that wanted to go over seas to fight with ISIS and when he was denied he showed his support by doing what ISIS advised him to do.
I would suspect that we're going to see a few more of these in the coming days that are going to spring out of nowhere.
Just because CSIS says that there are 90 radicals doesn't mean that there aren't more that haven't been discovered yet.

One other Security personnel was taken to hospital with non life threatening injury.
2 others were injured as well.
Police not stating it is the same man who shoot the military officer.

The Cross of Valour would be the highest award available for a civilian, I believe. I don't know about the ranking of merits to know if that would be above or below the Order of Merit of the Police Forces overall.

The Cross of Valour is only superseded by the Victoria Cross in the Canadian system of honours, it would rank above the Order of Merit of the Police Forces.

That's an interesting question. I would have expected that Harper would have pre-empted some TV time tonight.
Makes me wonder if the threat is over.

Frankly, I'm saddened by today's events, but know undoubtedly it could have been far, far worse had their been easier access to heavier weapons.
I hope for their sake at some point those Americans mocking the Canadian gun laws understand that.

I wouldn't give any of these pro gun lobbyist morons in the USA any time....most logical Americans don't.
People like this can always find weapons if they want them. This guy clearly had a semi automatic weapon and gun laws aside, was able to kill with it.
