I was just thinking the same thing. There should be some sort of personal conduct clause that should allow a team to terminate the contract not necessarily just cut the player per the normal rules.

It would have to pass through collective bargaining as where would you draw the line? Would DUI fit in this clause? Lots of players get DUI's and teams could use that as an advantage to free up cap space. It's not something they can come up with hastily as from an NFLPA perspective they don't want to make it overly easy for teams to cut players with a special clause.

Because Fox News can't help but be Fox News...
Quote:
But at least the folks at “Fox & Friends,” easily cable news’s most idiotic program, can mine it for a laugh or two. After running through the details of the assault this morning, co-host Brian Kilmeade joked, “I think the message is, take the stairs.”

Unwilling to be outdone when it comes to laughing about graphic images of domestic violence, co-host Steve Doocy responded, “The message is when you’re in an elevator, there’s a camera.”

I'm not gonna post the clip, because #### them.

I'm actually very surprised the organization acted so swiftly but still if they saw this film (not sure if that's been confirmed as the league is saying they didn't) before and only just did it today because it was made public it's still a little hollow in that they should have released him the moment they saw the film.

I hope he doesn't get another chance in the NFL - in 2014 or ever. However, the list of scumbags that teams have taken a chance on (Vick, Stallworth, Lewis, Pacman) makes me think he'll sit out this year, do some BS charity appearances and press conference and sign with a team in the offseason.

Thankfully they (finally) did the right thing. Sucks that it took the video coming out for them to realize what a scumbag he is but it's done at least. His career is finished, besides the fact signing him brings about wrath, he averaged right around 3 yards a carry last year. Declining back + major headache = career over.

49ers also released LaMicheal James this morning.

He had been unhappy since before the season and asked for a release once before. After talking to the team he rescinded his request, but after seeing how he had lost 2 of his potential jobs to rookies, he requested his release and it was granted.

I'm betting the 49ers would rather have kept Glenn Winston at this point.

Hey 49ers have a roster spot open for a RB. Rice could room with Ray MacDonald.

I wouldn't be so sure.

Roger Goodell has announced that based on new video evidence that became available today he has indefinitely suspended Ray Rice.

^^No he really won't. He's a running back who averages 3 yards a carry. Unless you're the Indianapolis Colts, that's highly replaceable. The backlash for signing him will be at least twice as bad as Vick. His career is over, no doubt about it.

Well Larry Johnson still got a chance after a domestic dispute case and than acting out against the team while looking like he was washed up on the field.....

Granted he was reported to throw a drink in a woman's face at a night club let alone Ray Rice someone.

Hopefully we don't ever see him again in football of any type that isn't in a prison yard.

No team will touch Ray Rice, the backlash isn't worth it and understandably so.

In other terrible news, Robert Mathis tore his ACL while training in Atlanta....Colts are dead in the water now.

Interesting to hear that Goddell suspended Rice "indefinitely" after levying a 2 game suspension. What about all the talk about "losing in court" and "double jeopardy" stuff?

I hope there's an investigation into what the NFL/Ravens/police knew and when. Something isn't adding up re neither entity saw the video TMZ just leaked. How did the police either not receive it from the hotel? If they did, why didn't the NFL/Ravens receive/view it? Fishy, IMO.

I believe the police saw it, but wouldn't show it to the Ravens/NFL?

Rice's fiancee refused to press charges. Heck, she went ahead and married him. Can the police do anything if the person assaulted refuses to cooperate? And in the US I don't believe you can compel a spouse to present evidence.

And the NFL doesn't have any subpoena power.

With the Ravens cutting him, he no longer has a contract. Teams can cut players for any reason they want.

Now the NFL is simply preventing him from getting a new contract.

I'm not sure how Rice could sue - getting cut is always a risk, and since being cut he no longer had any more contractually obligated income.

I don't believe this is true across the board in the US (I think it's in a minority of jurisdictions). Typically it's the D.A.'s discretion to press charges after discussing the incident with the victim. I can only assume an unwilling victim means a lesser likelihood of full charges. In this case, Rice's fiancee was unwilling and Rice had to take some sort of program in order to have the charges dropped. As for compelling the spouse to present evidence - the video kind of makes that moot.

Teams can cut players for nearly any reason, but I'll be interested to see if the NFLPA or Rice tries pushing back. Rice is 1/2 way through the punishment that was levied by the NFL. Increasing the punishment after the fact is a slippery slope for the NFLPA. Could this be the start of the NFL going back and punishing players for the same infraction after a punishment (fine, suspension) has already been determined?
