Likely he would have been bought out. Essentially ownership would have bought another pretty decent 1st round pick.
That sounds like exactly the trade I'd like to see made as a Flames fan.

To get the 12th and Riberio we probably would have been giving up a good player/prospect or two in order to make the deal. You guys don't think we were just giving up magic beans for him right?
Giving up two more sure things for a player to be bought out and a draft pick doesn't seem like great asset management to me.

Yeah when I read that, I thought this is Maloney telling the other GMs: don't say I didn't warn you
Not only was he buying Ribiero out, but he felt the need to warn the other GMs so that they didn't accidently walk into the same situation.
He might get a 'reclamation project' opportunity at some point, but my guess is he's done and off to Europe for now.

I don't think you get what was going on with this apparent proposed trade. Huge jump to assume we would have had to give that up on a player that was just bought out, Coyotes were looking to save cash and cap space, it's all about what they were willing to pay in assets to do it. Flames were in the drivers seat there, too bad it didn't pan out.

I don't have that much money but have a feeling they might be willing to give up the 12th overall pick in exchange for $12 million.
