It wasn't the trade deadline day we all wanted but it wasn't as bad as many are pretending it to be. So the market crashed for what we thought was our most valuable asset and the GM decided not to give him away. Sucks, but probably not a lot that could have been done. Ultimately we will never know as we are not the GM but given the low values paid out for far better forwards, given that they didn't move until the last minute, it's safe to say that this was the case.
In the end we picked-up two high draft picks this year. I am pleased about that. And by trading Berra, we probably improved our #1 draft position. Was it the best deadline day? No. But it was a better day than many had. Rebuild remains on track.

well i suppose now that i'm over the initial disappointment there are some kind of hidden positives from this deadline.
-backlund was not traded
-beartschi was not traded
- Gaudreau was also not traded

Adding a 2nd and a 3rd is alright I guess. The market just didn't seem to be there. I was also falling into the category of making a deal just for the sake of making a deal. I'm not a Cammalleri fan and really just wanted his spot in the lineup filled with a young guy for the rest of the way.
I am sure I am in the minority here but I am OK with Butler signing on for a couple more years. He's a little soft on the puck and makes the odd dumb mistake but I think he has been pretty good for past few months and is showing more consistency and confidence out there.
I think Stempniak will do well in Pittsburgh. Love to see him go on a bit of a hot streak to end the season. Best of luck to him.
A lot of GM's had to get suckish returns for playoff pushes. A few got some steals.
Honestly, we were one of the teams that got steal deals for the players we traded. Berra was a steal, Stempy was a just right deal, can consider it a steal as well.
Burke didn't intend to get draft picks, but he did take the best offers. Still baffled that Colorado called for Berra, good for Berra. Anyone know if he will be able to backup Varlamov, or is Giguere still doing that?

I'm a little tired of the crying over Feaster as well...... dude is gone, just move on.
My concern was more meant to question whether Burke is getting a free ride from fans. IMO being around Calgary message boards was nauseating back when In ``Sutter We Trust`` was the motto.

I am also curious about the failed three way trade. From the sounds of it the flames portion was done, Burke just mentioned the other team didn't get it into the NHL in time.
No, he said the other team didn't get the other part of the deal done.
That's why I'm thinking it was the Wild trying to get Vanek, and sending the Flames Heatley+ to clear the cap space. Then, when they couldn't get that deal done with the Islanders, they went for Moulson instead and no longer needed to clear the space.

Its not about a free ride, its about not freaking out over the loss of a potential mid-round pick. Its about as big of a deal as losing/wasting a pick on Lane McDermid - really its not that big of a deal.

It's not about a free ride. It's the fact that Burke hasn't even been with the team for a year yet. Time will tell, positively and negatively about Burke, but he needs to be given time to do what he needs with this club.
Writting him off, or declaring him the saviour after a trade deadline where there was little ability for him to dreastically improve or worsen our situation is dumb. Burke didn't make any moves that really hurt the team today, but that's not saying much cause the ability for him to do so wasn't really there based on the assets we had to move. He also didn't drastically improve the club, mostly because the ability to do so wasn't there based on the assets we had to move.
It's ok to be slightly dissaponited in not moving Cammy, and slightly happy with the return he did get for Berra and Stemp..........but to be drawing any real conclusions on his performance at this time is premature. Feaster had some time to show what he got, and by the end after fair amount of time, many people weren't satisfied with what he did and how he handled some fairly important moves for this club. Burke needs to be given a lot more time before we can evaluate in either direction, so for now saying talk is cheap or getting overly jazzed about his press conferences is just stupid.
I think keeping Cammy actually helps us improve our draft position. If we get rid of him we have to bring in another over eager prospect who will lead the flames on a run to end the season.

I will have to relisten to the presser..thought I heard him say they didn't get it in in time when he was talking to pat.
It's gotta be disappointment when you put that much work into orchestrating a 3 way and it doesn't materialize when you thought it was so close.
I would have liked to see Cammalleri dealt, but the prices today seemed to be pretty substandard. Really the return Hemsky fetches was pretty substandard, and that's likely what was offered for Cammalleri.

I don't know why, call it my Spidey sense, but I feel like after hearing Burke talk the Flames were set to eat Heatley's contract so the Wild could make a push for Vanek, with Cammalleri going to Anaheim as part of the 3-way. And then when Vanek went to the Habs the whole deal fell apart. The timing and information coming out of the Twittererse seems to support this theory, anyway.

hahaha!! A lot of dissapointed Flames fans because Burkie only made two moves.
I actually am happy that he didn't get rid of the players for the sake of making some trades. He also didn't pick any scrub so I am good. I know Burke thinks Cammy will re-sign sometime before the free agency that's why he didn't feel the need to trade him. Same goes to Butler. If you were Butler, why would you sign somewhere else? He is getting good minutes with the Flames even though he is playing on the 3rd pairing. 2nd and 3rd pairing are pretty much getting the same ice-time anyways. I am also glad Burke did not peddle some of the young guys. I didn't think he is stupid enough to even think about trading TJ Brodie like some posters here think it would happen. Not too dissapointed with Berra leaving because of Ortio and also getting 2nd round pick for him. Stempniak been struggling this season anyways so I am okay with trading him for 3rd round pick. I didn't think we would get that high of a draft pick for him the way he's been playing this season. Good on him though.. at least he will be closer to his wife and new twins.
Overall, i am not dissapointed for the lack of movement on this trade deadline.
