I would have preferred 3 over even at same total money but it isn't a horrible deal.
If this deal holds the Flames back from winning then we have some major issues outside of Stajan.

I don't think a single one of those guys is interested in playing for Calgary next year. Not for the dollar figure Calgary signed Stajan for.
I think that's probably the most significant factor.

Leg wand and maybe Ott are the only guys there that are an upgrade and Legwand will cost a lot more than 3 million a year.

Don't like this at all. This team needs that spot for developing players.

There's really nothing Stajan is really good at.

Sure, but why do dollars matter if the team is trying to get above the cap floor? Calgary already knows what they have with Stajan.

Solid signing. We need veteran presence.. and the only way I'd freak is if every UFA gets signed. Stajan actually cares and can play an NHL game, nothing flashy, but come on now.. for those freaking out -- chill.

We're stuck with Stajan like a stoner is stuck with a Yin Yang tattoo.
With any luck he'll inflate his numbers over the next couple of years and we can trade him & his decent-value contract for something useful.

Stajan has been solid the past two years, was maybe the team's best player last season... but a 4 year deal is more term than I would have liked to have seen handed out to anyone in this losing environment.

Even though they've never played with any of the current/previous rosters?
That's just 6 guys I listed. Stastny, Roy, Bolland, Boyle, Malhotra, Ryan Carter, hell even Koivu are also options.
Settling on Stajan after 50 games just doesn't scream "patience" either, imo.

I am fine with this signing...
Stajan has more value to a young Flames team then he has to anyone in the NHL!
I am also sick of people crying about how this is the end of Backlund, or means Knight wont get a chance, or if we take McDavid - in over a years time ... this signing will ensure we have "too much centers".
1st off center is the 2nd most important position in hockey besides a goaltender.
You can never have too many centers... You can move them to wing or even trade them. (yes we can still trade stajan if we want folks!)
Secondly I think a lot of fans would be well served by looking into what made emonton such a bad team.
They thought - like some of our fans do - that its a smart idea to ice a lineup of 1st / 2nd year players, who are all undersized and have minimal NHL experience.
So before you dream about the following line-up..
Gaudreau - Monahan - Poirier
Klimchuk - Jankowski - Agostino
Granlund - Knight - Ferland
Westgarth - Macdermid - McGratton.
Giordano - Sieloff
Wideman - Wotherspoon
Brodie - Kulak
Gillies
Ortio.
IF we ever iced this lineup, not only would we lose, we would be manhandled and in a perpetual rebuild because of the losing culture and lack of truculence/size/experience in the top 3 lines.
Jeez...its like some people dont know whats happened in Edmonton and how that team got to where it is today. It was through a lack of patience and an over-confidence in their young guys - and a lack of experienced vets to ease them (young guys) into the lineup / top minutes.
I am not a big fan of Stajan and even I can see this move is whats best for the Flames AND the young players so many want to see rushed into a sink or swim situation.

Malholtra might be an option because he's still not playing like an established NHL'er.
Honestly here, short of 10 million dollars, what is Calgary going to offer one of those guys?

Guys like Stastny, Roy and Bolland would probably only help the Flames from 28-30 in the league to maybe 25-27, theres no point, imo.
