This is not a big deal. Here's our third/fourth line, affordable, utility, assistant captain, veteran center for the next few years. Wants to be here, well-liked, works hard, will probably have no problem sitting games as the kids mature and doing anything the coaches ask of him. So long as we don't sign all of our free agents to four year contracts this is fine.

One of the worst days of my life. Well, I guess you have to fill the junk yards with some spare parts so your customers keep coming in....

Good money, meh term. Makes sense to me.
I see a few people questioning what happens when Knight, Colborne, Granlund, next years first, or WHOMEVER replaces him, but honestly? That's a problem we REALLY want to have.
That's a tradeable contract now, and it'll be a steal in a few years.

Still here - not much to say.
I said it from the start - Flames aren't winning anything with Stajan in the lineup, and I stick with that - next 4 years Flames aren't doing anything in terms of playoffs anyways - only thing they have a chance at winning is the draft lotteries.
Stajan is still a loser, but apparently he is well liked and respected in the dressing room - hopefully his work ethic is better than his play, as I don't want him teaching the young players how to be career losers.

Yes, a depth player like Stajan is the reason why the teams he has been on have sucked.

This is actually a rather nice contract; cap hit is decent. He makes 25% less than David Jones, and contributes probably about 75% more to this team. Look at it like that and it's not that bad.
Up north, Boyd Gordon makes the same amount and is similar age, but Stajan is a better player overall all things considered.
Cogliano just signed a $3M / 4-year extension with Anaheim and puts up similar numbers, more or less.
Grabovski signed for $3M this year with Washington, and he had a worse year last year than Stajan did. And that was during the UFA season, as well.
If Stajan can play until the he's 33, that's good. We still need bodies on this team. I wonder if there was a NTC / NMC in this contract, however?

So anyway, I hate this contract. Too long, too much. I predict he'll be back to his usual self under a new coach next year and I won't be the only one regretting it.

Would have rathered Burke goes after Goc, Legwand, Ott, Fiddler, Lewis, Moore, Fraser, pretty much any other option than just a new contract for Matt Stajan.
Signing was unnecessary and I still maintain Feaster would have caught a million times more flack for this than Burke is.

I actually like this deal.
Call me crazy but at least Stajan is an NHL'er. It would be bleak if we had to overpay a boyd gordon 3.25 for the same term for the same job.
Do not underestimate the unattractiveness of this franchise in free agency for the next 3 years. If an NHL'er wants to be here, Calgary will probably sign them.

Stajan is a player you put in your top 6 if you are a bottom feeder. He puts up points on bad teams. I could have lived with a 2 year contract, but we're going to be stuck with him beyond that.
Put him in the bottom 6 and you have a black hole that costs $3.125M.

Said it before: Stajan would be a solid 3rd line centre and a welcome signing if he was winning 58% of his faceoffs.
He's winning 48%.
Don't like this at all. This team needs that spot for developing players.

Is this the begining of the end for Backlund. Especially if we end up with either Reinhart or Mcdavid in the next couple of years, we would wind up with too much centers. That being said I prefer Backlund

Meh. He's a decent dressing room guy. He chips in some goals.
I would have rather we gotten a pick, but we will need to get over the cap floor, and we know what we're getting with him. Could be worse.
