I also believe Jooris plays RW and I'm guessing he sees some time this year as well. Actually I can see almost all of the young forwards with potential getting some ice time.

I'd like to see what Jooris has to offer on RW. He certainly has top-9 forward potential. Good mix of skill & energy. He's be a good call-up if we traded Stempniak.
Factor in Knight & Reinhart's development & I think there are players who need NHL playing time. This isn't a reason on its own to move some bodies in the forward ranks, but it should be a factor.

In a desperate move, Edmonton trades their first round pick to Buffalo for Miller.
Buffalo finishes last. Edmonton finishes second last. The NYI finish 11th and thus relinquish their first rounder to Buffalo. But lo! That pick wins the lottery and Buffalo owns the first three picks of the draft.

The Islanders pick is top 10 protected if they win the lottery it still will still belong to them. Even if they finish outside of top ten based on the standings

Really? So if that pick is a top 10 they get it back, they more or less get to keep that pick, and keep their 2015 pick as well? Or does the 2014 pick get differed to 2015?

I'm honest to know why people want to retain any of our current vets like Stajan, Cammy, Stempniak and even Russell if they can bring back significant returns.
Russell is the only player I'd consider keeping as a depth defensman for 2 mill per or less. Stajan, Stempniak, Cammy and just about all the other players on the Flames can be replaced (not every other, some players should be here long term). In the off season we can get guys who are just as good if not better than them, we can even over pay to get them and sign them to one years deals and flip them at the deadline. I just don't see the reason for keeping a guy like Stempniak on this team.

I agree. If the right deal for Russell comes along I think Flames should sell high.

Re Russell...
The issue is: is he having a career year, or is he a solid player who has taken his game to another level?
Selling high means selling while the current value is at an unsustainable level.
If the player (asset) can maintain that level, you are not 'selling high' you are simply selling.
When you sell a good player, you then have to find another good player to replace them. I am not sure that it would be easy to replace Russell at his price (I am guessing $2.5m to re-sign him?)
Constantly selling assets as soon as they become good, leaves you constantly searching for new assets. In other words, a perpetual rebuild, like the Islanders.

It's deferred to 2015. And it's not automatic.
For example, say the Isles pick is 10th, and they decide they don't want to lose their ball in the McDavid draft, they can still opt to give us the 2014 pick.

Russell is only 26. While it is possible that he could regress after this season, it seems unlikely. He is the age when defenders start to put their game together. Even if he takes a small dip in production or effectiveness next season, it is more than likely that he will continue to improve or at least maintain his current level of play in the next four to five years. Highly unlikely that the Flames could recoup his value in a trade, especially if you add in the draft pick they already used to get him.

Yea Russell could easily be a part of the future. I'd love for Feaster to sign him to a short term deal, and if he's still playing at or near his current level when that expires, lock him up long term.

I don't think anyone is untouchable given the right return. I think most who want to keep certain players around are considering what they think that player would realistically bring back in a trade.

Wouldn't hit the floor for sure... plus Statsny is going to be the best forward available and is going to get 7 year offers no way he signs for just three.

Sounds about right. The Flames are going to have to spend money to reach the Floor... Means that we'll need at least two really inflated contracts. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Flames take a strong run at Phaneaf in the offseason.

And the cost of replacing them. I think some are really optimistic to believe vets can just be replaced in the off-season.
The pool of players available to the flames will be akin to Ference and Gordon - older and on stinky deals. Maybe not even as good as those 2.
that might be ok given the return or what the flames vets want to re-sign, but it's not a slam dunk.

This idea of flipping guys we signed in the last year or two has to die. This isn't NHL 14 folks. If the Flames go around flipping UFA's we signed 15 months ago, Calgary will become a toxic destination to any players who have a choice in the matter.
I'm all for moving out veterans for picks if we have younger players who can step into their roles, or if the return is high. But sign and flip is bush league. And the Flames management isn't bush league enough to actually do it, so get the idea out of your head.
