Pick your ultimate trade deadline scenario
Here's mine:
- Cammy gone for 1st rounder (somewhere around 20th pick), B prospect
- Stajan gone for 2nd rounder
- Butler gone for 5th rounder
Post trade deadline lineup:
Baertschi - Monahan - Hudler
Glencross - Backlund - Stempniak
Galiardi - Colborne - D Jones
Bouma - Knight - Mcgrattan/AHL callup
Gio
Wideman
Brodie
Russell
Smid
Sieloff
Ramo/Berra
This lineup may lose a bunch but this will kick start the rebuild and we'll have another big draft in 2014.

I'd like to see Cammy, Stajan, Butler, and Galiardi (surprise) traded. Stempniak and Russel re-signed
MacDonald, SOB, and Smith can go on waivers
Then Gaudreau, Agostino, and Arnold signed out of college for some games

No, you don't want to pick your trade deadline scenario?
Or no, you don't want to ditch any vets and you want to keep them all for the rebuild?

The only pending UFA I want the Flames to sign is Russell. Trade Cammy, Stempniak, Butler, Stajan, Galliardi, and if they can B. Jones and Joey Mac.
If we are talking dream scenario I am hoping the Flames can somehow trade for Ryan O'Rielly around March 1st. I am sure it is water under the bridge between he and the Avs but I would love to add him to the roster.

You got Stempniak and Galiardi mixed up.
Chances are that Backlund will be part of deals as Butler, Stempniak, SOB virtually no value on their own. SOB negative value and will have to be moved in a package with the other team taking on his next years contract.
Backlund and SOB for a slow developing D-man prospect ... Gromley / Rundblad / Erixxon type of guy under 22 with still a huge upside but not what their upside was when they got drafted...... same as Backlund.
Smith, Stempniak (-13) and Butler (-14) are not a problem as they are UFA's at seasons end and don't cost the Flames anything to get rid of.

ideally yes. Plus if Feaster can get something for Galiardi, I'd be happy too.
Stempniak and Russell are the only two UFAs I want to see re-signed.

Trade Cammelari, Butler, Stepniak and Backlund, Galiardi or SOB for picks. Keep Stajan for leadership and utility because you aint gonna get much for him and we need a post apex center. You wont get much for anyone but Cammelari and maybe StempniaK but give a kid a break. I see Cammelari as a great guy I will miss but he will be long gone by the time it matters again to this team.

I dont know what the numbers are although I assume very low when it comes to signing a guy and trading him the same year. Perhaps signing and put on waivers but not trading.
Gives the organization a bad rep if you ask me. Who wants to sign with a organization knowing that half a snake bit season later you could be packing your bags.

I like that scenario. I would also like to flip Wideman for a D prospect in his 20's and a low pick.

I like it. But also trade Stempniak. Definately re-sign Russell.
Keep Wideman as well.

I would trade them all, but Russell. Granted i have a feeling that by next season that one of Gardiner or MDZ will be a flame, and Russell will then not be needed.

If we have fewer than 30 2014 1st round picks, the rebuild is a total failure.

Cammy + Backlund goes to either Det or TB for a 1st and prospect
Stempniak goes to STL for a second.
Stajan goes back to TOR for a second.
Smid goes to SJ for a second.
T.J Galliardi goes to MON for some prospect no one has ever heard plus a 4th.
Obrien goes to WAS for a 5th
After having 29 different trades for Butler rejected, Feaster gives up and eats Butler finding it more feasible than trying to trade him.
Down the stretch we get to see the young guys play, john Gaudreau signs after the College season. Ortio gets called up and plays great.

I forgot to say I also wouldn't mind SOB Gone, and yes I would like Russell re-signed.
I'm on the fence about Stempniak but he sure has been crappy lately.

flames win every game from here on out and boston sucks. iggy asks for a trade to calgary for chris butler. flames beat tampa bay in 6 games in OT, gelinas scored because he is subbed in after baertschi gets scratched after game 5.

Funny because there's only going to be 29 total first rounders with New Jersey having to give up theirs.

Dream scenario? Being able to flip Stajan and Stempniak as a pair for a first. Stajan might be worth a 2nd, and I would say Stempniak is. Combine for a first at the deadline? Probably wishful thinking, though any team could use that depth at the deadline for a playoff push.
I wouldn't trade O'Brien at this point. Arguable negative value there. Rather see him benched than to waste an asset freeing up room. I don't think there is anything wrong with keeping him as a 7th D anyways - better he sits than a developing defencemen. Use him in games against bigger teams when needed.
On the fence about Galiardi. Lots of energy and good forechecking, but does little else. To me, he is a 4th liner. Bouma makes better plays than him, though doesn't have quite the persistence that Galiardi seems to have. I can see value in keeping Galiardi, but he seems more like a 4th liner than anything else.
Cammalleri for a 1st and a prospect. If he keeps scoring at this rate, he will get that return easily - but only if he keeps producing at this rate.
Backlund remains a Flame. I just don't think any other team is going to give up enough to make it even appealing to off-load Backlund. Great attitude and effort, while doing a great job defensively. Possible late-bloomer scenario, but even if this is what he is, I just don't see him as a guy you trade away just to get a middling return.
Russel re-signed in January.
Derek Smith (who I actually like) traded for the highest offer at the deadline - mid to late round pick? Defencemen usually go for a premium at the deadline - I see him going for anywhere between a 4th and a 7th. I don't see the value in re-signing him at this point, at least not with Breen and O'Brien for those 6th/7th spots, and possibly guys like Ramage, Cundari, Sieloff possibly pushing for a 6th spot as well. If O'Brien is gone, re-sign Smith and use him as that 7th defencemen whose development is irrelevant.

Realistically,
Cammilleri for a 1st rounder or top prospect, say Emerson Etem (ANA) or JT Miller (NYR)
Stajan for a 2nd rounder, or a pair of picks like a 3rd and a 5th.
Butler for anything we can get, say a 6th rounder. Butler may have to be part of a package as I'm not sure he's going to be sought after by any teams in a straight up deal, but some may take him in a package if he provides them with D depth.
Russell for a 3rd rounder or second rate depth prospect
I'd like to see Stempniak re-signed to a 2 or 3 year deal with a slight pay increase. Right attitude, some leadership, serviceable on this team and fills a position where there isn't a lot of organizational depth (RW). Kris Russell has all these checkmarks except that the Flames have a little more organizational depth on D, which is why Stempniak stays and Kris Russell goes.
TJ Galiardi I could take or leave. If he enables a trade by being part of a package, he can go.
O'Brien isn't tradeable I don't think. Ride out the year with him and he may end up on waivers before the early part of next season.
If Glencross comes back and you can get someone to take on his (fair) salary next year, he could go in a package for as high as a first rounder. If that's the case, trade him.
Fill the holes vacated by the above with a combination of guys signing out of college (Agostino, Arnold) and deserving prospects from the farm and ride out the year.
