On what grounds?
Mr Maher was actually talking about this on the FAN this morning, discussing at length how the team seemed to really respect and react to his leadership, not only on t, but off the ice as well.
Sounds like he is a very popular and well respected captain.

Jesus. If half of you get your way, Feaster will be strapping on skates to fill lineup holes after the deadline. As much as we love the young guys in the system, you still need some solid vets to show them the ropes. I wouldn't mind if they held onto Cammy. If he's not getting us a first round pick or a quality prospect in return, don't move him. No need to force something that doesn't NEED to happen.

From an outsider's point of view with no sources in the dressing room, I think Gio is a better captain than Iggy.

And then what???? It's not like he is under contract after this year. I think posters are living in dream land if they think Cammi is going to sign a 3 year, $ 5million contract. If the flames want him to stay, my guess its going to be a 5 year $6 million contract.

Just a general comment, but why are people so eager to flip guys like Cammeleri and Stajan when the guys that would replace them are unproven at the NHL level. Monahan, Baertschi and Gaudreau are not first line players yet.
This line of thinking is why the oilers are in such a dismal situation. Your young players have to outplay the veterans and make them redundant.
Personally, the only moves I want to see the team are moves where we take advantage of our salary cap room.

Not sure it is so much that Gio is a better Captain. I mean Iggy did when the Mark Messier leadership award in 2008-09. I think a better sentence might be Gio is a better captain today for the team he is captain of today. Not to say Iginla is or was a bad captain because I don't believe he was, but everyone leads in different ways.

Why are people forgetting that there is also a UFA and trade market. Even if the flames trade Cammi, Stempniak, and Stajan, i highly doubt that they are going to leave those spots open for youngsters for the following season. Maybe they will leave one spot open but the rest will be filled by other veteran players.

The decisions on who stays will greatly depend on what the flames think it will take to keep them and how much they could get for them.
To keep cammalleri, it will cost around $5.5 million per for 5 years. I know everyone here prefers the 3 year contracts for guys over 30 but it's not realistic to think you will get that for him. If he stays healthy and keeps producing like he has, he will be the most sought after forward at the deadline. His best competition will be gaborik and vanek but he's having a better season than both of them and his cap hit is lower too. Plus he is a proven playoff performer and powerplay specialist. I would like it if the flames retained some of his salary to sweeten the deal but not sure if they will. If they did, he should fetch a 1st round pick and B+ prospect,
Stajan might be one of very few centres available at the deadline so that could increase his value. He's having an ok season so far statistically but the stats don't reflect how well he is playing. Any NHL scouts that are watching him will be able to see that and it should also make him more coveted by other teams. His cap hit is managable and he can play up and down the line up. Contenders really like to add extra centres like stajan. Part of me thinks he could return a first round pick if there is a perfect storm of teams bidding for him but it is more likely he brings a 2nd round pick. He is a similar asset as Chris Kelly and he was traded to boston for a 2nd round pick. To keep stajan, it would probably cost $2.5 million per for 4 years... Which wouldn't be that bad considering he is a center who can play in all the situations Calgary needs and he can play against the top players of other teams in order to shelter the young guys for the next few seasons. However, I would rather that job go to backlund if he can keep playing like he has over the last few games.
Stempniak is a streaky scorer at times but he has played well all year. When he's on his game like last night he does it all... Score, forecheck, slick plays, hard hits. I think he would be a good option to keep cause I think he wants to stay and he could probably be signed for a reasonable amount and term... Probably $3.5 million per for 4 years. He would probably return a 2nd round pick but I think he would be more valuable to keep,

You trade Stajan, Stempniak, O'Brien and Butler that opens up four spots for younger guys who might be close to making the team. That is enough IMO.
|
I only mean it would be wise to listen to offers on them, not necessarily trade them. If a killer offer came in for Hudler, way over the odds, it would be silly to hang onto him simply to have a veteran presence. If Hudler gets traded for an awesome return, then it could be possible to keep Stempniak or one of the other vets.

Trade the post apex players for pre-apex players.
Then re-sign the good ones.
Being a GM is easy.

It is part of building a winning culture:
Guys that are currently on the Flames that for most of their NHL careers fully expected to be in the playoffs:
Hudler (5 playoffs out of 7 seasons), Cammalleri (3 out of 9) , Wideman ( 4 out of 8), TJ Galiardi (3 out of 5) and have played well in the playoffs
Veterans who fully plan to be golfing at the end of the regular season: Stempniak (2 out of 8 with really really bad playoff contributions)), Smid (0 for 7) , Stajan ( 1 for 10), Gio (1 out of 7, his team made it 2 of 7 but he was hurt) , Glencross (1 for 7), David Jones (1 out of 6)
I don't want Monahan and Baertschi and Brodie and Gaudreau to be mentored by guys who have not been contributors to successful teams themselves. I don't want them to learn how to cope with losing.
Most of these guys have to be cut loose and replaced with some veterans who have won and understand what it takes to win.
The 2004 Flames were underdogs but had Yelle, Gelinas, Ferrence, Simon, Conroy, Niemienien, Lowry and Warriener who each individually had as many playoff games as the list of the 2013-14 early golfer Flames veterans combined.
What an incredibly bad decision picking Bouwmeester over Phanuef.... Phanuef is 5 of 8 making the playoffs.... playing a key role in all those playoff teams.
It speaks volumes that the player with the most team success on the Flames -- Hudler (an ESL guy) is the guy that steps up and gets Monahan to live with him.

Even so, they always play together and have so far shown excellent chemistry. Remember when Hudler was the first to jump over the boards when Sean scored his first SO goal?

I think that when looking a the guys the Flames should be trying to move fit with the team is as important as who the guy is.
I think Cammaleri should move, because I think we works vary well in a top 6 role. But he probably would not be effective moving down the line up. Give our Depth of LW prospects, I think organizationally the Flames would be better with a Guy who can play anywhere from the 1st line to the 3rd line that will push Beartschi, Gaudreau, Agostino, or Klimchuck to earn a top 6 spot in the next two years.
Stempniak should go, because out RW position organizationally is too old. One of Hudler, Jones or Stempniak needs to be replaced by a guy in his early 20's that can push for top 6 minutes. And right now you probably can't get enough value out of the other two.
Smith, Butler and SOB should all go, because D are too hard to judge until they are playing against top competition, and Breen, Wotherspoon, Seiloff, and Ramage all need to be tested in the next year or two.
Backlund should go, because some times you need to maximize asset Value. Backlund stock will not be going up, and we already have 2 younger better Centers in the NHL.
And Stajan should stay, because much like Glencross on LW and Hudler/Jones on RW. It is good have one or two Vets around that can play anywhere in your lineup to push guys to win minutes.

Who is this early 20's RWer who is close to stepping in? I guess Ferland could be the closest. Hanowski plays some RW despite being a left shot I guess he's a possibility in the future.
Jones and Stempniak are natural RWs. Hudler is actually a left shooter who's smart enough to play his off wing but that isn't really his natural position. He was drafted as a centre.
Don't think our depth on RW is so strong that we need to dump Stempniak. I think he'd be a great vet to keep around during the rebuild.

It would be ideal to upgrade that position with a pre-apex top 6 right-shooter. A young veteran RW to replace Stemper (should he be traded) should be a priority.

Dream trade deadline day?
The trading of Stajan, Butler, O'Brien. And David Jones to a lesser extent.
