Scholes was brilliant, but best English player of the last fifteen years? Even his most ardent supporters would admit that he had great difficulty timing routine tackles properly. That said, tough to name many English players that were better than him since 1998.

Big surprise in that video, Carragher goes for Gerrard, Neville for Scholes. I wonder who John Terry would have picked if he was sitting there. What's the point in asking them that kind of a question?

Jaime Carragher comes off as a bit of a prick in the video.

he had, especially in his later career. But to me, that doesn't take anything away from Scholes' performance over all those years. Just a minor imperfection

Carragher is horrible. His point of "winning games" is laughable, as Scholes clearly wasn't an attacking midfielder in his best years (although he had a fantastic shot). Still, I remember crucial goals - for instance the lone goal vs Barcelona in the CL semifinals 2008. Hard to argue with Neville (I know - quite a shocker, coming from an Utd fan ), Scholes really was brilliant in controlling the tempo and I would agree he was the "glue" of United for many years. Scholes was probably the best passer I have ever seen in football ... the way he calmly distributed the ball, often with inch-perfect wide passes to the wingers, as if it was the most normal thing in the world - I've never seen that ability and accuracy from anybody else, especially not over a long period of time.

Not trying to take anything away from Gerrard and Lampard though, and it would be tough (and probably pointless) to rank those three. All three of them have been extraordinary players, and their unbelievable loyalty to their clubs has been refreshing in a world of football where players often go for money, force transfers and change their clubs like underwear. Still, you have to wonder why the Lampard-Gerrard partnership has NEVER worked for England and if Scholes would have been the better option to partner on of them ... not a huge surprise that Capello tried to convince him to return for South Africa 2010.

I think Lampard and Gerrard are directly comparable but not Scholes, Scholes was a much different style of play to Lampard and Gerrard.

Scholes is more comparable to Xavi and Pirlo IMO, and really there is no other English player like him.

As wingbacks, Carragher wasn' better than Neville in any facet ---- other than own goals.

He obviously still carries that inferiority with him today.

I find those who really watched Scholes, would see that his tackling wasn't as poor as many make it to be. How would it be, with the best passing feet in the EPL that any can remember?

He chose those tackles. That was the fire of the ginger ninja.

I would agree for the first 80 percent of his career. At the end, I think most of those tackles happened because he had lost a step and simply went in too late.

I think Gerrard is a great player, Lampard less so

But Scholes is another level

Quote:
In the last 15 to 20 years the best central midfielder that I have seen — the most complete — is Scholes. I have spoken with Xabi Alonso about this many times. Scholes is a spectacular player who has everything. He can play the final pass, he can score, he is strong, he never gets knocked off the ball and he doesn’t give possession away. If he had been Spanish then maybe he would have been valued more.
Xavi

My toughest opponent? Scholes of Manchester. He is the complete midfielder.
Zinedine Zidane

The player in the Premiership I admire most? Easy – Scholes.
Patrick Vieira

He is the one whose level I aspire to. He is the best player in the Premier League.
Cesc Fabregas

I can’t understand why Scholes has never won the player of the year award. He should have won it long ago. Maybe it’s because he doesn’t seek the limelight like some of the other ‘stars’.
Thierry Henry

Why isn’t he playing for England? It is crazy. Only in England. Scholes is a great, great player. So experienced and still, for me, one of the best in the world in midfield. Manchester United are lucky to have him.
Jose Mourinho

Scholes is undoubtedly the best midfielder of his generation.
Zinedine Zidane
Carragher's argument made no sense, and when Neville tried to argue with him that controlling a game is no less important than scoring a goal, he had no follow up

Neville has shown over the past 2 years to be extremely fair and balanced, he has criticized United players when the time called for it

Mostly disagree. The most recent I can think of where he was sent off, was against Zabelletta and that dirty Argentine had it coming. Very reminisce of Keano.

Leverkusen upset over Valencia, whom they accuse interfered with Leno.

I dont get it, he was a good player, and by all accounts is a decent manager, whats that got to do with inferiority?

And that goal shouldnt have counted. May as well get rid of the goalline refs if they arent going to call that.

doubt it. They need somebody who pushes Zabaleta back with speed and that has to be Welbeck IMO.

De Gea
Rafael - Ferdinand - Vidic - Evra
Carrick - Fellaini
Valencia - Rooney - Welbeck
van Persie

book it.

back 4 picks itself but my guess for the others is

Carrick - Fellani - Giggs
Rooney- RVP - Welbeck

maybe rotate and have Rooney central with Giggs on a wing, but based on today I dont see Giggs being left out
